I’m guessing that rather than pertaining to a vitally important matter of his lived experience, as with JKR, for Shatner this is a point of principle.

He has form for blundering into subjects he doesn’t really understand, e.g. autism.

He isn't nearly as relevant these days as JKR. JKR puts out a new book, its big, big news. Shatner is 90 or so, nobody is going to go crazy over a movie or show with him in it.
