My take is that some straight white men aren't into masculine gender roles and think that therefore they're women instead.

It was slowly going there. Feminism made it for women in 90s and later, so any woman was able to go into men's cloth shop and wear anything from there and it was fine. Starting from 00s it was slowly going for men too, red and pink colors became normal, more "women" cloths were normalized among men, and maybe 5-10 years more and men would wear skirts during hot weather and it would be perfectly fine. However, this transgender boom throw all this back by 20+ years, and now it is no longer normalized. So "masculine" men who were wearing pink before, now "don't want to look like those trans", and if regular men wears pink, he is all time asked if he is non-binary or trasnwoman.

Gladly that "jobs" are not regressed to "men job" back, however, for little girls in English-speaking countries seems they did. No wonder that transwomen are in majority grown up men, while transmen are girls, teens and in general mostly young women.
