I love ONTD, but recently the attitude seems to have shifted back to very lib-femmy, pandering bullshit. I guess all the TERFS were bullied into silence. I know I was.

Yeah, I thought there was still a healthy number of gender critical voices left at ONTD these days, but I guess they've been driven away like everywhere else. I rarely visit anymore, but I had wandered in every few months or so and had seen a refreshingly GC attitude in many posts in the past. JKR must have driven them over the edge.

But, it's not surprising, ONTD has always been super lib-femmy. I was a heavy ONTD user during its peak in 2005-2008ish, and not gonna lie, one of the things that drove me away from ONTD and Livejournal fandoms in general was the slowly creeping over-the-top wokeness. It was one of the first places I saw the weird fetishization of homosexuality that has become a hallmark of the TRA movement.

I was really sad to see that all the GC women were bullied into silence there. It was so refreshing to see somewhere on the internet other than GC that has some sane women speaking out. Now it's gone. :(

I was banned from ONTD. For saying 'terfy' stuff back when JKR first posted stuff last December.

So a lot of them could have banned, like me.

What a nasty blog. I read terrible stories about people doing terrible things, and even I have to wonder who needs this kind of petty negativity in their lives?

This POV that equates following someone on social media with endorsing and agreeing with everything they say - and being "friends" and "identifying with" them - is so juvenile.

I follow lots of people on social media I agree with on some things, and disagree with on others. I also follow quite a few people whose views I find largely reprehensible - because I want to see what "the other side" is thinking and saying. How can I argue against their views if I'm not thoroughly familiar with what their views and arguments are?

When I grew up in the 1960s and 70s, people of all political stripes believed that to be fully informed it's crucial to take in viewpoints all across the political spectrum. And that's it's good for everyone to regularly challenge one's own beliefs, and to learn to argue from - and against - the POVs of various sides.

It's analogous to why we need exposure to dirt and germs in order to develop adaptive immunity: humans only form antibodies to, and can mount viable physiologic defenses against, pathogens to which we have come in intimate contact with.

That's basically what the posters, mostly, are saying.

I used to go on ONTD a lot but the JK Rowling posts on there recently made me stop visiting, I couldn't stand the ultra wokeness. However I will say there are some terf members on there and they were the driving force of me peaking trans and also finding Gender Critical.

Richard Ayoade <3

And LOL @ Emma Watson. Twists herself into a pretzel to be the wokest of them all and still gets singled out for the hate crime of "following on Twitter".

Ugh that shithole gossip site. I used to be active on there, back when they had a more lighthearted atmosphere (the Hobbit party posts were a blast). Nowadays a lot of the content consists of nitpicking celebrities for past actions they deem problematic, however minor it is.

Cool. That gave me a list of people TO follow. I think Stephen King still follows her? Ricky Gervais? She has 14.2 million followers, were those really the only ones this person found?

I'd never been to this site but reading it it seems like a cesspit of people with too much time on their hands.

I posted on ONTD all the time around 15 years ago and I visit on occasion just to keep up to date on pop culture, celeb deaths, etc and I was shocked by how TRA most of the comments were. I made a post here yesterday about how I find it infuriating that men can self ID as women no problem but people like Halsey and Pete Wentz who are white-passing POC are told they aren't black because the "one-drop rule" isn't enough. ONTD was actually the place I saw people making disgusting comments like that about white-passing black celebrities and negative comments about white people in general. It was gross.

ONTD has a fair few terf members though, and it's a largely black women's community.

No way. Black women started it, but it was taken over by whites ages ago.

Not anymore, or they are afraid to speak now. I used to go on there are there were many defending women, probably because it's a female dominated sites and any site that is female dominated tends to have more of a GC side to it. But they've been bullied into silence and the GC comments are gone.

Now that you mention it, I recall they had a post about the Yaniv waxing case that made me reach peak trans. Several users made some good arguments which drew my attention. There was another post where people were pointing out the erosion of women's rights to the point where TRAs were screaming like toddlers for the mods to intervene.

[–]ravenclaww 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

I swear ONTD had a gender critical stance not too long ago, and it was the TRA/handmaidens who were the minority... what happened?

[–]DimDroog 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

They did, not too long ago either.

Now they're back to full lib fem garbage.

[–]ravenclaww 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's disappointing. It must have been a really quick change then. I wouldn't be surprised if TRAs took over to colonize ONTD again.

I remember recently (I think in one of the JKR posts) a user being upset about misogyny, and one of the mods (toxic_illusion) basically told them that if they didn't like it they could leave the community. I messaged another mod (ms_melissa) about that but they deleted my comment. Ironic thing is that ms_melissa runs women-focused film pages on other social platforms.

When? I've been on Livejournal since forever but only got into ONTD in the past year or two and it has seemed super trans positive, and I got banned from it back in the winter for being GC. For me it's hard to believe it was ever GC, lol.

[–]ravenclaww 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Just a year ago when Yaniv made a bunch of headlines, there was a post about Ricky Gervais talking about the salon issue. It was during that time when GC views were being discussed openly. If you got banned in the winter, there must have been a sudden shift since summer of 2019.

[–]ekitten[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, I found out about GC feminism through ONTD. I hadn't actually heard much about trans stuff before that. But it seems like now you get warned by mods for pointing out misogyny or homophobia in trans posts. Before r/gendercritical got shut down, a few people on there said that a lot of GC women and lesbians had been banned.
