This is a bit of a tangient from OP but, I get ads for egg donation and surrogacy on FB sometimes and it's just so disgusting. How is that legal?! You can't sell a kidney can you? Why is it okay to sell body parts as long as they are female body parts?

I get ads for birth control, and I've had a tubal ligation. Their ads are stupid.

You can sell sperm and plasma in the US. Women are born with our eggs, and the process for retrieving them requires an OR visit, unless things changed from 15 years ago (they probably did). Typically they're dosed up on a cocktail of a prescriptions to increase the amount of eggs ready to be viable, and then retrieve them with the tiniest cannula. They're vetted pretty heavily on medical and psychological history and have them go through more evaluations to make sure that it's something they understand and truly want to do, same with the parents receiving.

"At birth, there are approximately 1 million eggs; and by the time of puberty, only about 300,000 remain. Of these, only 300 to 400 will be ovulated during a woman's reproductive lifetime."

Having known someone who did the process, "vetting" them is a copy of their medical forms and a questionnaire. That's it.

I've heard so many accounts of women who now are wondering if they're going to be at an increased risk for ovarian/breast/cervical cancer, fertility issues, and a sense of loss-did her eggs go to a good family? Is it ethical that there is more of "her" in the world?

The whole thing is terrifying.
