I can tell you right now, I would never have made it through college if thought and speech were policed the way they are today. I just would not have. I'm not even talking about the obvious stuff like racial slurs, anti-semitism, etc., the stuff that everyone knows is wrong. I honestly cannot imagine what it is like having to watch what you say all the time lest you become a social pariah for an instance of wrongthink. You could say something in class, and by the time you get back to your dorm, all your friends would turn on you b/c it'd be shotgunned all over social media.

Imagine nowadays studying at biology/anatomy college - it should be a literal nightmare to anyone with critical thinking and logic.

My NPB professor 20 years ago told us how a student complained of sexism when he said, "the vagina receives the penis" during one of his reproduction lectures because it takes away the agency of the female organ. He told us this to explain why he was going to then say, "the vagina POUNCES upon the penis."

He was an old grouchy dude who probably had a lot of sexist commentary and views in his personal life, and he's probably passed now. But sometimes I wonder what would have happened in that lecture hall had it been today.

Something like "external intromittent organ comes in close contact with internal reproductive organ" should be inclusive enough, but I am not sure, I don't know this new inclusive language much.

You are not alone, and you probably aren't even the only person thinking the "wrongthink" in the class.

One classmate left a group chat I was in purely because of this, one said she'd hope I'd reconsider and the teacher himself called it cruel for me to "disrespect their identities". I really hope I'm not the only one there.

Just be super tactful at all times. Having XY chromosomes isn't an identity- gender is a social construct which can only be described using stereotypical traits. Maybe act dumb about it, like...I don't get it, so femle gender is just feeling like a woman and wearing dresses? What about butch lesbians? Or just don't engage whatsoever. Graduating is much more important I promise. But know there will at least be a few who think like you.

I agree about the tactful thing. We want to win the war, not the battle. It won't do you any good to get cancelled over this. You don't know if your professor will hold this over you or if your classmates will refuse to work with you. In that case, keep emailed notes and tell someone and if they give you unfair grading later or they label you as a troublemaker you have a paper trail. I hope you have your own support circle in college. Since you've already outed yourself, the safest course of action would be to just leave it as everyone has the right to their own opinion and refrain from saying anything else when that topic arises.

Just know that you're in the right. It's disrespectful to tell a woman that her womanhood is an identity that can be assumed especially by a male. Or that kindness means she has to consider abstract male feelings in her every action and thought lest they offend a male or make them feel unsafe.

Oh man, I can't imagine how painful that must be. Feelings over truth.

It sounds terrifying, and it's sad that colleges are no longer a place for solid discussion! Hang in there--you're not alone.

It's worrying that places like colleges promote this stuff. They are supposed to be places where you can think and speak freely. What they are doing now is indoctrination, not education.
