She isn't just fighting back, from what I've seen she's doing so very eloquently. The contrast with people on the other side, who like you say are constantly attacking her, is clear for all to see. She doesn't sink to the level of spewing hatred and personal attacks. Her tweets are rational, well thought out and make it clear she speaks out because she cares, not because she hates. The exact opposite of what they try to paint her as.

Mediocre men hate smart, eloquent women who won't back down.

I think her messages are largely motivated by peaking the bystanders or at least planting the seed of doubt in their minds. She knows that the indoctrinated TRAs are a hopeless cause and that most people, particularly liberals are only going along with this charade because they have some misconception about what it's really about and think it's some sort of organic civil rights movement.

[–]Feather 14 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 1 fun15 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

most people, particularly liberals are only going along with this charade because they have some misconception about what it's really about

Absolutely.

I think most people do actually know it's messed up. If you get someone one-on-one to talk about it, almost all of them (even in liberal circles) will admit that they don't believe a guy who loves his beard and says he's got no dysphoria is a woman. Most people do have sympathy for trans people who physically transition because that's the life they want and then they leave everyone else alone. I also have sympathy for that predicament.

I used to think, "Well yeah, it makes sense that someone who looks just like a woman would want to be in the women's restroom. It would be bizarre for them to be in the men's restroom and they wouldn't even be bothering anyone in the women's restroom if they really look like a woman. Who would even know the difference?"

But then I realized what's actually going on.

And I also realized that these "I want to be in women's spaces" types really do need it to be WOMEN'S spaces. They would not at all be content even if every location had a third, sex-neutral restroom. I'd be perfectly fine with it if a location had a women's restroom, a men's restroom, and then a sex-neutral restroom. Hell, I'd use the sex-neutral bathroom when the line for the women's restroom was too long (which it often is). But no. They want the WOMEN'S restroom. I also don't see any issue with single-occupant restrooms being sex-neutral since there's only one person in them at a time. But that would not suffice for them either.

Ugh.

only tangentially related but i had to use a mens room once (single user) and the urinal was placed just so that if i had leaned forwards on the toilet i could have drank from it like a fountain. it was clean (thank GOD) but it was too stupid to ignore. whose design choice was that??? why do men have so few stalls in the multi-user bathrooms??? public buildings should have sensible bathrooms. i was at a restaurant a different time where the bathroom was literally a converted closet that was hardly big enough for the door to avoid hitting the fixtures. asinine!

[–]windrunner 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

having a third sex-neutral restroom was the reasonable alternative many people speak about but to them and their ideology it's not ideal because, really, that would just reinforce the idea that they are not really women (wich they aren't, they're trans women). that's why they forcefully want to be included in the women restrooms, because TWAW right??? So why are the unreasonable period-havers not immediately accepting this? How terf of them. Why is it always women who have to conform and make spaces for men exigences? Also, single occupant restrooms is not what they want. They want the womens restrooms. And to win that theyll appropriate anything female related and call names and make violent threats and also victimize themselves.

No one actually reads what she says though. I just waded through 700 comments of "fuck that TERF, uneducated bitch just bitter, refuses to learn and doubles down".

She's advocating for teenaged kids to talk their feelings out instead of rushing into medical transition. Of course they're pissed.

I'm not on Twatter (because reasons), can anyone copy/paste the 11 posts she made? I don't know how to see them without making an account. I'm a bit of an idiot with technology. (Because of my ~LadYBraiN~ teeheehee amirite gals?! So WOMAN of me!)

[–]venecia 40 insightful - 2 fun40 insightful - 1 fun41 insightful - 2 fun -  (14 children)

That username... holy shit, there's more than one of me in this country!

Back on subject, here it is:

I've ignored fake tweets attributed to me and RTed widely. I've ignored porn tweeted at children on a thread about their art. I've ignored death and rape threats. I'm not going to ignore this. 1/11

When you lie about what I believe about mental health medication and when you misrepresent the views of a trans woman for whom I feel nothing but admiration and solidarity, you cross a line. 2/11

I’ve written and spoken about my own mental health challenges, which include OCD, depression and anxiety. I did so recently in my essay ‘TERF Wars’. I’ve taken anti-depressants in the past and they helped me. 3/11

Many health professionals are concerned that young people struggling with their mental health are being shunted towards hormones and surgery when this may not be in their best interests. 4/11

Many, myself included, believe we are watching a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people, who are being set on a lifelong path of medicalisation that may result in the loss of their fertility and/or full sexual function. 5/11

These concerns were explored by the recent BBC documentary about the Tavistock Clinic. Whistleblowers were talking about transitions driven by homophobia. https://bit.ly/31KLdRf 6/11

As I’ve said many times, transition may be the answer for some. For others, it won’t – witness the accounts of detransitioners. “The system sees surgery as the easy fix to girls who do not conform.” https://bit.ly/31LWP6L4/11 7/11

Sophie is a trans woman and a true feminist ally. She was making the point that anti-depressants were over-prescribed to teenagers in the past, with serious consequences. https://bit.ly/2VNqyIK 8/11

The long-term health risks of cross-sex hormones have been now been tracked over a lengthy period. These side-effects are often minimised or denied by trans activists. https://bit.ly/38F0GnD 9/11

Carl Henegan, professor of evidence-based medicine at Oxford University, has described the off-label use of puberty blockers on under-18s as an ‘unregulated live experiment on children’. https://bit.ly/3dVU6Kg 10/11

None of that may trouble you or disturb your belief in your own righteousness. But if so, I can’t pretend I care much about your bad opinion of me. 11/11

First of all thank you for posting the tweets! Also - there is a BBC doc about this?! Must. Find. ASAP. And MOI! :D Oh god we are not alone! (My actual sister is lurking here somewhere as well btw... so more of us who are FINNISHED with this gender cult ;))

Another one here! The Finnish GC sub wasn’t very active but I’ve been looking for a place with likeminded finns, nice to know that some of us found their way here!

[–]vitunrotta 3 insightful - 6 fun3 insightful - 5 fun4 insightful - 6 fun -  (0 children)

I fucking love your username. Rusina! I laughed out loud when I saw that. Raisins are ALWAYS quite radical, though. Trying to make their way into OUR cookies... Disguising themselves as chocolate chips... THE NERVE. /s

(VERY off topic - I was in a mental rush to create an account when I found this site and just made up this name. It does have a meaning but anyway. My other choice was "vuorinauris." Little background: my partner is a South American guy who loves to try to speak in Finnish... And we had spoken about animals and plants and all that before. Like you know, hirvi, porkkana, kauris, peruna, so on. Then we saw some video of deers and he gleefully tells me he knows the name. And just says "LOOK, it's a nauris." (And I thought I heard him wrong. Kauris and nauris are too close phonetically.) He repeated "nauris" and I almost died of laughter because well. I have a dorky sense of humour and thinking of some noble NAURIS e.g. standing in Järnefelt's "Landscape from Koli" makes me have a fit of laughter that usually ends up in me feeling like I cannot breathe. Ah! Had to share this silly story, totally off topic. May the raisins, rats and turnips finally unite!)

EDIT: Some wording for coherence.

Oh and, on a completely serious note - I have been wondering about spaces/places like that as well. I don't live there anymore but an online community could be a good start. Happen to know any? Feel free to PM if you want to talk in more detail. I have found the Finnish feminist groups in FB especially cult-like and would not like to experience that shit again. Maybe there's another way, I just don't know what.

[–]radikaalirusina 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

Actually I fluidly identify as a chocolate chip so if you refuse to eat raisin cookies you’re incredibly grapephobic. /s

I don’t know any Finnish online GC communities sadly, but a discord channel or something similar for casual talk would be refreshing.

And you should have gone with vuorinauris, that story is hilarious!!

[–]vitunrotta 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Are you invading my space?! Raisins are NOT grapes. Actually one of my uncles IS a GRAPE so do not make fun of this. I will doxx you, you terrible, horrible raisinphobe. /s

...Speaking of the actual topic - I would love to be a part of a bigger site in Finland but I think so far the radfems have done pretty well. I think one of them was in AV (tietäjät tietää...) and posted many of their links. That's how I ended up here. Ha! :D

In any case I think even the name "radical feminist" sounds super off-putting to like 98% of the population - so something more GC would work better. There are, after all, some women who are NOT feminists and some gender-criticals who are not women :) Sisua!

Yea, first bitly link goes to the video clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTRnrp9pXHY

Did you notice a whole lot more encounters with trans people here? I swear this seems to be the ''internet bullshit encountered in the wild'' capitol of the world. It's where I met the creature that peaked me.

[–]radikaalirusina 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I actually peaked when I saw an article about Rowling, and a TIM had commented something along the lines of how the language should be changed so that women would be called menstruated/breeders (all in Finnish). I was actually kind of a TRA before but the thought of being called a “synnyttäjä” in a general conversation just made my blood boil.

Is it just me or are TRAs mostly incredibly privileged people? Imagine telling someone in the Middle East that they should just identify as a man in order to stop being sexually harassed.

[–]vitunrotta 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh my god. Exactly that. Imagine telling women - nay, even girls - coming from an extremely oppressed place to begin with, that because DUH they are WOMEN (natal, biological, whatever dumb word needs to be attached...) according to the TRA movement you can just "identify" as a man and that's that! Whoop whoop! No more FGM. No more harassment. No more misogyny. No more child marriages. It's fixed now! It's just ALL gone because you decided you're a dude one day. I mean my fucking god?! If THAT had been the answer all along I think we'd all be "dudebros" by now. Funnily enough, that nonsensical logic doesn't EVER go the other way around (where women would be taken seriously when they acted like women, looked like women, had their vulvas and boobs, and just proclaimed they were MEN now). It does NOT work the other way around. Rachel fucking Dolezal much?!

But we are inherently different biologically and we have been treated differently for centuries because of these biological (factual!) differences. The oppression of women hasn't happened because some people ~felt~ like women. It's because they (we!) WERE and still ARE women. It hurts my heart to think there are these proper second-wave feminists out there - waiting for our support, our understanding, our sisterhood - and these goddamn libfems are only thinking "well, I suppose a dick is as feminine as anything. Yay! Oppression is gone!"

UGH. Is there any radfem movement/organization that is trying to make amends with our oppressed sisters elsewhere? Libfems just seem to say "I like, can't, like, know how you, like, feel so, I like, wear a hijab because feminism, like, yay? Also femaledick like, so openminded like I can't even. Dicks before anything! I am so feminist! Hashtag TWAW! Wow! I changed the world!"

I CAN'T TAKE THIS SHIT. I am livid, in fact. I am done. I want change. How do we change?!

[–]Lilith_Fair[S] 11 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 0 fun12 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You can just Google Twitter JK Rowling on your web browser. You don't need an account to read stuff on Twitter. I don't have an account either.

Ah, excellent. She is probably the only reason I'd ever consider joining Twitter - I massively enjoy watching her slay those cultist gender ideologists...! P.S. I've seen others post links to Twitter directly and haven't seen anyone banning that, so I suppose it's OK to do so? :)

[–]vijfkeervier 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

They ban people over there for misgendering and saying that men are not women, so be careful

[–]BugInfo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, that's true. If a person is getting a ton of attention and engaging with the other side to the point that it enrages the other side - they may end up with a ban.

I've been on GC Twitter for years. I only follow other GC accounts and generally retweet posts that are meaningful and impactful to me. I haven't gotten into too many spats with strangers, so I've haven't been banned yet. It's a good way for me to stay on top of the latest GC news and to see the massive community of other women (and men) who support each other on this issue. I need it for my mental health haha! Maybe that's why I baby my account so much and have kept myself safe from banning - I couldn't bear to have it shut down

[–]vitunrotta 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

JKR is a queen! She's the only person I've ever seen use Twitter for good.

I really do think she's the push that will get the dominoes to fall.

Once the outrage mob realizes that they can get their moral superiority high from investigating all the wrong-doings of the TRAs, it's all over for them.

[–]aldoushuxleyghost 33 insightful - 1 fun33 insightful - 0 fun34 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

The responses to her tweet are either full on support or "Shut up, you're hurting my feelings." No real debate.

[–]vitunrotta 20 insightful - 1 fun20 insightful - 0 fun21 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Obviously. The other side doesn't have facts and science on their side - what else are they going to do than moan about their hurt feewings and send rape threats? I'm also astounded by the number of natal women backing up these trojan transwomen. It's unbelievable. Not an ounce of critical thinking left on these handmaidens. :/

[–]SavvyDiogenes 15 insightful - 2 fun15 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

They won't engage - some TIM bloke who linked to the never-ending "18 mUrDerS" on some older previous rowling tweet (i think the Maya case) blocked me when I pointed out to him the misogyny of blaming women for murders that men have done. I didn't even question the validity of those murders (which are questionable - as most weren't hate fuelled). The idiocy in those men and the handmaids who believe for a second that men murder TIMs because they listened to rowling or radfems is astounding - men never listened to radfems, so GC thought never "caused" a murder, not even once.

[–]wicklesnarf 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

This is the worst thing. Not engaging with her points, just telling her to shut her mouth. Juno Birch, in particular--A biological man telling her she needs to "be quiet immediately". It makes me furious.

[–]Finnegan7921 23 insightful - 1 fun23 insightful - 0 fun24 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

This is how I know JK is a far better person than I am. What I would do is step back, write a new HP trilogy of when they're all older and running the school, being adult wizards, etc. When it becomes a massive bestseller and a studio wants to turn it into a movie series, I'd say "Fine, but you're only getting the rights to it on one condition : you will not cast any of those three ungrateful little shits", and I would say it publicly. They hit her on twitter, I'd hit them where it hurts, the wallet.

[–]wrongthink 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The HP gang are already obscenely wealthy.

[–]Finnegan7921 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

True, but these people seem to always want more. RDJ wasn't doing Iron Man for free even though after a few films he didn't need the money. Tom Cruise doesn't need the money but he still gets paid. Same goes for plenty of them. Excluding them from a new trilogy may not break or even really hurt them financially, but it would be a stinging rebuke and missing out on the biggest payday any of them would ever see again.

[–]wrongthink 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Daniel Radcliffe's career after HP was him doing weird little movies because he could. After a certain point I think it's just attention seeking and personal boredom that drives these people. Note RDJ could keep making more money on the Iron Man shit but he wanted the character ended and was relieved at the end of his contract. What does he do after? Some dumb talking animal movie that sucked and bombed. Maybe that's more money seeking behavior on his part but he didn't need to put in anywhere near the same amount of effort for that shlock compared to what his Disney contract was demanding.

If these people can get their feel good kicks from dogpiling on social media I think they will be perfectly happy with not receiving more roles in the old universe. If anything they can wear that as a badge of honor to be bandied out for their simping fans. I agree with you that they shouldn't be given these roles from now on, I just don't think it will hurt them any.

[–][deleted] 22 insightful - 1 fun22 insightful - 0 fun23 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Did a skim of the replies and there was a female "doctor" saying something along the lines that Rowling was wrong straightout to say that it could be dangerous and her science was wrong. People were asking the doctor if she was saying it if was proven to be safe, which she didn't have a reply to. I don't believe doctors should be practicing wokeness as a standard of care. Is it standard medical procedure to give addicts opiates they want because they say it helps them, or should we assess the whole thing from an objective standpoint on probability of harm? There's also some trans people who are replying that if they hadn't gotten the treatment their mental health would have suffered, but anecdotes aren't science and alternate forms of treatment can't be ruled out without being tested. Even questioning this is now considered transphobia.

Nothing will help peak people more than these self-appointed experts on gender, science, womanhood, righteousness, and morality policing people what they can and can't do lest they trigger the delicate feelings of TiMs. At least anti-vaxxers stay and flat earthers stay in their own lane and don't try to take over

[–]Veneficca 21 insightful - 1 fun21 insightful - 0 fun22 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I'm starting to worry about her safety. Not kidding. She's been so calm, eloquent and compelling that she is singlehandedly waking up millions of people to the truth and I worry that some of the more deranged (or well-funded) TRAs will try to shut her up for real.

As bad as some of the tweets to her are, I'm sure she, her publishers and associates are receiving truly frightening threats. They nailed a dead rat to the Vancouver rape crisis center, god knows what they will send or do to her.

[–]femuhnist 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, no joke, I'm worried about the same thing.

[–]IStandWithHer 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If they anything of the sort, they'll turn her into a martyr. That's, I think, the only reason why they're holding back. She's too much of a public figure, too well-known, too popular to be killed in a car accident or harassed w/o anyone noticing or connecting the dots. If anything happens to her, there will be riots in the streets.

But I agree, I'm worried about her. And her family. Nothing more terrifying for a parent than their children being potential targets because of their parents.

[–]Feather 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I suspect she employs a variety of people specifically for personal protection, including people to assess hate mail for signs that the writer might act on it. I hope that's enough to keep her safe.

[–]crodish 20 insightful - 2 fun20 insightful - 1 fun21 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

There was one reply that really touched me:

Your voice is so important Joanne. You gave so many of us strength to start speaking up w/ our names and faces attached. Much love from this same-sex attracted, mentally ill woman.

and the queen replied:

You left out 'brave, kind and wonderful' when describing yourself

I just... ahhhhhhhhh ;___; as a fellow lesbian terf on anti depressants this was such a beautiful, kind reply. I love JK so much...

Of course people are dog piling on the OP and saying shit like, "you don't speak for all lesbians" "i can say on behalf of all lesbians we don't stand with terfs" and it's just fucking eye-rolling

Man I admired her from the first word of HP. She's gotten me through so much (her books have) and she's now going to get so many women through all this vitriol. I don't believe in God but I'm seriously praying she's able to hold on while we all join her.

Editing to add : twitter has made this a moment now. Has anyone noticed how twitter only adds dissenting opinions to these moments if they don't want to support it? How cowardly and manipulative.

I know "Moments" are basically Sort By Controversial for twitter (also it sounds like a mom's euphemism for a child's tantrum: "Taylor had A Moment when we went to get his hair cut") .... but to make a Moment out of a completely inside baseball controversy, which was that Rowling 'Liked' a certain other tweet.....? IJS, I hope that on a meta level this "nontroversy" signals the last days of twitter's relevance. (but I gotta say they photo of JKR they used for this Moment is divine)

I agree. She looks lovely in it. Today transpeoplearerealpeople was trending. Didn't she tweeting saying she was concerned for their safety? Would she do that if she didn't consider them people? I don't get the drama. It's like the meangirls movie on redbull or something.

[–]morethanafeeling 18 insightful - 1 fun18 insightful - 0 fun19 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I love how any time she posts about this stuff the people I follow on twitter who are all ~offended draw attention to it by screencapping or retweeting. All they're doing is giving her more attention, which causes more people to peak. If they were smart they would just ignore her. I don't think they can stand that she explains herself so well.

[–]windrunner 0 insightful - 1 fun0 insightful - 0 fun1 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

they really can't stand that, and thus several posts attacking her go viral even reaching numbers such as 80-90K likes and rts. posts that in no way try to rationally make their point. they're not smart, and the more vocal ones are the so called 'allies'. they spew such vitriol and the majority of people just go along with it as if it wasn't a big deal. they can say "I wish to put JK's head on a pike" or "I wish she would just shut up or she deserves to be raped to learn" and these idiots are like "yeah!!" but God forbids if a "terf" even said that about a transperson, which I never ever saw anyone doing (doesn't mean it doesn't happen but they're certainly not as vocal as the TRAs and trans people)

I love how the cult is crying at her, "B-b-but, you're not a scientist or a doctor!!!!!!1!"

It goes both ways, trans-cultists -- NEITHER ARE YOU!!!!

Hell hath no fury....... and I fkn love Jo Rowling! It's personally very heartwarming to see her speaking up on behalf of the gay and/or gender non-conforming kids who are especially at risk.

Also, shoutout to Manaxium! I remember you from GCdebatesQT....so I will now consider myself 1 degree of separation closer to JKR ;)

[–]MadLass 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

People on my FB are making insane comments saying shes in support of conversation therapy for kids. Even when I clicked on the article they didnt give any direct quotes. Im not on twitter can someone tell me what actually was said?

[–]vitunrotta 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

WHAT? It's the actual opposite she is saying but alas - people don't want to read, think, study or criticize anything anymore. Too much brain work I suppose. In any case, just go a bit up in this thread and you will find what she ACTUALLY said (u/venecia posted the thread). Also, as another member recommended, you can just google and find her real tweets :)

[–]femuhnist 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The great irony, of course, is that what's REALLY "conversion therapy" -- telling thousands of GNC kids that since they don't conform to their gender's stereotypes they must really be young men, women, or "neither," or telling kids that it's OK to express themselves how they want to, it doesn't change who they are? Oh, the horror!

[–]vitunrotta 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

(Also - not sure if that was a mistype? Did you mean conversion therapy? Because converSATION therapy is certainly what 99% of these kids need. :D)

[–]Riothamus 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

From what I can tell they think she chose "Robert Galbraith" as a pen name to match "Robert Galbraith Heath", a psychiatrist who tried gay conversion therapy in the 1950s. Nevermind that the psychiatrist went by "Robert G. Heath", this is enough evidence for them to say she supports gay conversion therapy.

Oh, and she wrote a trans person as a villain in one of these stories under the Galbraith moniker. I am not making this up.

The irony here is that JK was one of those liberal who was moralising everyone about diversity a few years ago...

[–][deleted] 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

And what's wrong with diversity? That's a completely different argument than the one that says women should just disappear so a bunch of LARPing assholes can take our places, badly.

[–]wrongthink 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

I think people were bothered by the "Hermione is black and everyone is secretly gay" allusions she made on twitter to pander to the woke crowd that now wants her head.

[–]leche_flan 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

She announced that Dumbledore was gay in 2007. One year before gay marriage was legalized in the US. The "woke crowd" did not exist in 2007.

She didn't say Hermione was black. She simply approved of Hermione's black actress in Cursed Child. She said she never specified that Hermione was white (Caucasian). Some people tried to "gotcha!" her, saying there's a line in the books where it says "Hermione's white face" -- which at best, implies that Hermione is definitely light-skinned. Her race, however, is never stated outright in the books.

Her 'pandering on Twitter' was simply her answering inane questions from fans about random details in the books. I recall JKR receiving flack for saying Anthony Goldstein was Jewish. She did not tweet that out of nowhere: it was a reply to a user who asked her if there were any jewish students at Hogwarts. What was she supposed to say? No?

[–]TherealSimbul 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

And she didn't "announce" Dumbledore was gay. She was doing a Q&A and someone asked if Dumbledore had ever had a girlfriend. That's when she said no, he was gay.

[–]Veronica 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'd just like to point out that, except for Dumbledore, no character in the Harry Potter franchise was said to be gay by JK Rowling. Not a single one. It's the fandom that is obsessed with writing fan fiction where every character is suddenly gay/lesbian/bi/pansexual/trans/genderfluid. (There is a blog on Tumblr dedicated to the theory that Snape is actually a transwoman, check it out if you want to laugh.) Speaking of Anthony Goldstein, he's part of a list of characters that Rowling wrote back in the nineties before she started writing The Philosopher Stone and his surname is Jewish. So she's been knowing that Anthony Goldstein was Jewish for two decades before speaking about it on Twitter. (Just because someone asked her if there was some Jewish wizard at Hogwarts, not because she was trying to make a statement)

Yes indeed, thank you for clarifying.

[–]lefterfield 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

My take on it is that it doesn't really matter what race was specified in the book, translating characters to a stage/screen is never going to have them looking the way we imagine them when we read about them anyway. It's a bit strange to switch now given that the movies had already come out, with a white actress as Hermione, but... her race is a negligible issue, in the context of this story.(in some stories the character's race is important) So if a black actress was the best one for an entirely different adaptation, then sure. It's somewhat unusual, but I don't see the problem.

[–]windrunner 0 insightful - 1 fun0 insightful - 0 fun1 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

If she didn't aprove the actress in cursed child they would've called her a racist anyway. You can't win with these people.

[–]leche_flan 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

The actress ended up turning against her anyway because of her essay. It's all so stupid.

Yeah looking back on that I seriously cringe lol. But let's be honest, that's the exact kind of bullshit any of us would pull when faced with those frothing lunatics. She's learned better than to indulge them.

[–]wrongthink 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm a more quiet and private person so I don't know what it's like to be the richest and most famous author of her era. From my perspective I just wouldn't engage with these questions in the first place. If she felt like she had to respond I guess it's understandable that she would lean into her fan's delusions but I think a written work should speak for itself without needing further input from the author to make it "more correct" for trendy sensibilities.

[–]OrangeFirefly 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Which is why you would think her former fans would pay more attention to what she is saying now!

Is it more likely that she is: (A) a closet Nazi who is creeping out of the right-wing closet after 20-odd years of left-leaning politics or (B) someone who has thought deeply about these issues and who is troubled by the logical consequences of trans ideology

[–]Jamiethiel2018 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Exactly, and the same could be said of LGB Alliance, etc. It would seem the first step in identity politics: detach brain.

[–]jet199 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Diversity only brings a benefit because it means there is a diversity of POV and opinion. If everyone thinks the same but just looks different diversity brings no benefits. However the latter kind makes people a lot happier, diversity is difficult and stressful and people will often complain about working in that kind of environment but the end product is just so much better.

I genuinely cannot understand why she is facing so much backlash. Comparatively speaking, her tweets are extremely reasonable, tame, and fair. She even states her support for trans people several times. She just reasonably believes that a lot more research needs to be done and that there MUST be limits to protect people and sex-based rights. I literally sat here with my mouth agape as I read a tweet from someone who is clearly insanely delusional calling JK Rowling an EXTREMIST. The tweet said she became a radicalized EXTREMIST. Um, since when did JK rowling take out her AK-47 and go around shooting trans people? NEVER! AND she never said 1 negative thing about trans people either! WTF are these people on!

[–]wrongthink 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Social media addicted types exist in purity spiraling hellholes where to have a nuanced conversation about any topic is tantamount to hate speech. It is a festering cult-hole that encourages the worst kind of behavior from people (note how any prominent person will always receive death threats, regardless of what side of the political spectrum they are on). The most reasonable people you've ever met in your life are never the kinds of the people who are constantly shitposting on social media. Reasonable people put clear separators between their life and the AlwaysOnline shitposters who do nothing else in life.

I was puzzling over the "I've ignored porn tweeted at children" thing and how people were calling that out, how strange it was, until I realized: The only reason porn is being tweeted at these kids who are making pictures for her story is BECAUSE these people want to shut her up so badly. They're willing to make it look like it's HER fault that some really creepy adults (I'd guess largely men) are abusing her and CHILDREN because she won't kowtow to their whims. Classic abusive mentality: "It's her fault he hits her because she's just so difficult, what else is he supposed to do?" Nope. There is always the choice to... not tweet porn at children? It's not her fault for having views that don't align perfectly with someone's ideology that are clearly still based in intelligence, critical thinking, and respect for others. I can't believe I almost fell for that.

She is incredible! and taking a look at the responses, it pretty much falls into TRAs repeating the TWAW mantra at her or just shouting insults. Great job guys. It looks so bad compared to her polite and factual arguments.

[–]Shizuki79 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think anyone with half a brain can see that she's right. To brush everything off as 100% non-concerning and safe is completely foolish. Of course there is going to be long term effects, and unforeseen consequences. To silence everyone who raises a concern about safety is mad, in my opinion. No medical treatment is completely without risk of harm, and the people who undergo the treatment have a right to know about the risks they're subjecting themselves to. But oh no, can't talk about that, because apparently it's transphobic. What a mad world.
