It's the "boiling frog" story . . . they turn up the heat slowly, steadily, and the poor frog doesn't even realize he's being cooked.

Misogynist bullshit, little by little, layered on over time, it gets so deep and "normalized" you don't realize you're swimming in it til you crawl out of it.

Rad. Welcome. Agreed that Reddit hates women. Radical feminism really opened my eyes to the blatant misogyny normalized into our society, especially on internet culture. I despise that “Karen” is woke for bitch.

Every time I saw someone posting about it in a sub that was usually not political, I always played ignorant, "Karen just means cunt or bitch, right?" And would always have someone engage with it trying to explain away their misogyny. I don't know if I ever got anyone to think about it, but it felt like if I was openly critical they would've just ignored.

I agree! I usually ask whether Karen is a new code word for bitch. When they say yes, I say that I won’t be using it then. Sometimes I go into how appalled I am that the internet perpetuates so much misogyny. Fortunately, libfems do find words like “bitch” to be problematic even though they still use them so they tend to agree with me and stop using it.

I refuse to go back, and it pisses me off that people are posting things like "Reddit is making concessions and is allowing banfemalehatesubs back". BIG F--FING DEAL! They hate women, plain as day, and allowed major medial outlets to call our views "hate speech". Going back to them is like remaining in an abusive relationship.

Yeah, I know of the 430 million users they get advertising off of, one person bailing isn't much, but I won't be someone such a misogynistic pornographic site can capitalize on.

THIS. Reddit stood by while mainstream media outlets called our women-centered forums "hate speech". I saw one screen shot on twitter where reddit banned a sub with a name like "radical feminism" and there was a message "we recommend countries to prosecute radical feminists" (I'm paraphrasing here, but it's on twitter). What else do we need them to do in order to prove to us how much they hate women?

Honestly, leading up to this time I started to ask myself if I had an unhealthy fixation with checking reddit. Granted, there are a lot of useful subs on there, but it was eating into time I could have spent on more useful activities. That being said... all the effort I put into advising women to avoid the mistakes that I made in my 20s... much of it erased. It's just overwhelming. On top of that, I'd be afraid to keep an account with them considering how certain members micro-target women like us. The amount of hatred certain groups within the trans community and liberal men's communities have for us is unbelievable-- why subject myself to their hate?

Older white women have become quite the target for entertainment. It's becoming normalized to the point where it's possibly going to start branching out into other age groups or races. I'm hoping that if it starts branching towards black women that they raise unholy hell and this stupid shit starts getting dismantled. Right now, maybe white women are just being forced into cowardice for the sake of fitting in or not hurting someone else's feelings, lest they be called Karen. Actually, I'm thinking that might actually be part of why gender identity started getting so hot with white folks.. like a protected status almost. A shield?

Thoughts?

I'm in my sixth decade. Old broads, regardless of race, are the least likely to cower. We may observe silently, taking time to assess, but the majority of crones have identities and backbones of steel.

"Karen" is being popularized to socially pressure younger women: "don't be this, it's unattractive ".

I don't condone bad behavior I've seen in SOME "Karen" posts, but the message of "STFU women" implied, I'll fight all day.

I don't think it's a coincidence that us "older women" are targeted. I'm almost 40. I've learned a lot through experience, and I am also vocally anti-porn as I've experienced a relationship deteriorate over it, and have witnessed a huge rise in sexual coercion aimed at women that seems to be influenced by it. Targeting women like me helps social media/tech platforms because peddling porn brings them big money. They don't want women like me on their platforms. The trans contingent, the majority of virulent MtF are very pro-porn--- I'd argue they're mentally damaged from too much consumption of porn. Social media wants to protect them because they help proliferate porn culture. Social media/tech companies would also LOVE to make bank off kiddie porn. That'll be the "next taboo" they try to destroy.
I should also say, porn culture is making women who are "past their prime" non-humans. Women don't count as valuable unless they're "porn perfect" and submissive. It's crazy for me to think about how I thought GC seemed "a little too focused on trans issues", and here I am completely blind-sided and fully awake.

Karen is both misogynist and profoundly lacking in originality.

Saidit is anti-black? Ugh. I didn't know this but I'll going to poke around so I can be more informed. Thanks.

I'm pretty old but it's been eye opening to me to see what a difference it is having a loose cannon president. I was very scared when he announced that women should be grabbed in the pussy--that's open season on women. I'm not moralistic about divorce, but knowing he's an abuser and what garbage he was/is to his wives... permission granted for all the trash men to follow his examples. I miss having a president who was a good man, who would denounce violence, and respect and be loving to his family. I feel like the only thing that motivates some men is public shaming.

There are actual white supremacists posting anti-Semitic and anti-black trash on the politics page of this website. I really can’t get behind hate and extremism.

[–]lefterfield 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ugh. I haven't gone to any page beyond GenderCritical. That's disgusting.

[–]Amareldys 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yeah, in the politics page and not in their own extremist subs unfortunately.

[–]Rationalmind 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, I unsubscribed to the politics page so I didn’t have to see it. I wish they went into their own sub too, but I’m sure someone will start a more moderated politics sub with actual politics eventually.

Sounds like the GC mods are setting up their own site. So stay tuned, we'll be moving shortly anyway. This is basically like after a breakup when you have to get the crappy hotel room before the lease on your new place starts.

Personally, the kind of conspiracy theorist that would post into the void of saidit emptiness rather than on Voat where supposedly the hardcore undesirables fled is not scary whatever their views are. They're like the local crazy person on the corner, just white noise.

Few times ago i saw a post (possibly on aita ) where a man was calling his wife karen for not taking the wrong medicine the pharmacologist gave her. turn out she would have been dead, if she had. so stop to call karen every women that do something you don't agreed. Personally i would feel proud to be called karen because hey, i'm glad at least men recognie i stand up for myself !! you can call it an insult, i will wear it as a medal ! (and do the same thing with few things that people use to 'blame' women to be theyselves ! )

There's a lot of money to be made right now from antagonising and the entrapment of women in compromising situations in videos divorced of context (see Karlos Dillard). It discredits the anti-racist movement as when there are actual instances of racism, will people believe it then? How does it always end up being women? I think someone is going to end up dead because of this trend

I saw one that was a photo of three middle aged women standing together in a store and the caption was something like - "A herd of Karens." They weren't doing anything other than standing together, but for that they were mocked. It seems that every woman is a Karen who is deserving of ridicule and abuse for simply existing in a public place. I can't recall one instance throughout history of it being socially acceptable to treat a group of people this way.

So? How is it anti-female?

[–]Spikygrasspod 16 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 0 fun17 insightful - 1 fun -  (16 children)

It's an insult specifically for women. The excuse is that it's only for 'entitled' women who act like arseholes, but imagine if you made an insult for any other marginalised group. Pick one. Imagine it. Imagine if your excuse were "oh, but it's only for people (of that category) who are lazy/deceitful/perverted/violent" or whatever. You can't do that. It might start off as a way to single out women who are entitled arseholes, but it ends up as a stereotype that all (especially white, middle class) women are entitled arseholes. Soon enough it will be used to just insult and silence women, any women, even if their behaviour is not entitled.

They did used to do that with the N word and black people. You'd call them on it and they'd say something like, "There's a difference between Ns and black people. N is an attitude. There are white Ns too." You watch, they'll start saying there are dude Karens, just so they can keep using the stupid word.
