It was great first and foremost because it had tons of different things. The intro showed you extreme vastness and the game just kept on delivering more new things for the player to do. That was genius. The story also:

  • you're a scientist;

  • you're a scientist escaping a destroyed facility to get help;

  • you're a scientist escaping a destroyed facility to get help only you are being hunted down by aliens;

  • you're a scientist escaping a destroyed facility to get help only you are being hunted down by aliens and the military come to "clean up";

  • you're a freaking killing machine somehow beating impossible odds.

This progression gave the game its uniqueness, its personality and flavor.

Just get a ticket to Hamburg and i'll show you. This involves you, me and a Lada Niva. Do you like Brunswick ?

We don't even need an officer of mine because i still box quite well myself.

What are you talking about dude. You lost me. But if we met, I would give you the greatest gift you might ever hope for.

One day you buy a flight ticket to Hamburg. Then i get into my Lada (as soon as it ever starts running again: But np. It is my old fkn bitch) and we'll drive into my lab in some hidden areas of lower saxony as soon as it is finished. This is supposed to happen in Q3 next year.

We also could take the easy road and take the Audi A6 of my first officer (or any other car of ours: I drive them seldom) but i really don't want that.

Housing and drinks are on me. I'll show you my staff, IT and future.

We are even building guest houses starting this winter.

One of the reasons i went into mathematics after my (till to today) quite serious stint in geodetics.

I'm playing black mesa right now and you notice the ton of empty space and areas. They should have added more puzzles or something. It was great back then because it was one of the first narrative driven fps games and people loved the change. Game-wise it's not that great, but the story is timeless now.
