    My assumption is that along with mental health issues, religion may have played a role for the shooter given that the school was Christian and religion can be at odds with those that are different.

    True, although the shooter last attended that school when she was in the 4th grade. She would have been 9 years old, so it seems unlikely that she was aware of her own homosexuality at the time. Also doubtful homosexuality would ever have been addressed by the school, and certainly not transsexuality. Not even the most liberal schools in the country were talking to kids about transgender issues in 2004. But Hale was also high-functioning autistic, and it's possible that she did face ostracism or bullying for reasons not related to religion.
