How does babby form?

[–]loveSloaneDebate King 18 insightful - 8 fun18 insightful - 7 fun19 insightful - 8 fun -  (1 child)

We share 85% dna with mice, 61% with fruit flies, 50% with bananas, and 37% with cucumbers.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??? Are humans just a social construct? How are some people allergic to bananas? Nothing makes sense anymore.

How are some people allergic to bananas?

They are just not cannibals.

•1. You’re so right! The fact that females menstruate, gestate, and get female specific disorders is a total social construct. That’s Patriarchy for ya. Except I guess it’s not since sex is a social construct so we can’t blame how female bodies function on males since... if sex is just a construct, how did we ever even get separated into the two sexes? Actual, can you answer that? It’s so weird to me, that you’d acknowledge that there’s 10-20% differences (lol) between sexes but then claim it’s a social construct. Wouldn’t there be zero differences if it’s just a social construct?

•2. Even if race is a social construct, it’s built on the fact that different ethnicities (and cultures) exist. Surely you’re not denying that?

•3. Surely you realize that race and sex are entirely different? Like- completely different subjects?

•4. “A female shares at least 80%-90% of her genes with a male and vice versa, then how can there be such a thing as female or male when male and female share most of their genes with each other? What's happening here??”

What’s happening is that pesky, ever present 10-20%. We share many genes because we are the same species. Human.

•5. You ever notice how animals, plants, insects etc are referred to as male and female, not just humans? Why do you think that is?

•6. “It seems one's believing biological sex is real means one should believe in racial realism too??”

Why, when they are two different things?

“So someone that believes biological sex is real and is not a social construct should believe race is real and is not a social construct either or else that would be hypocritical to say biological sex is not a social construct while race is, right?”

How so? You haven’t explained your logic clearly.

•7. Ethnicity is real. The factors that lead to “race” being a thing that mattered are visible and true realities. Sex is not and was never a construct. It exists and was observed and noted. The reason for it is that the percentage that’s different makes one sex function in ways that the other sex cannot. This is real, it’s a proven and observable fact. It’s literally why we are all here. As Catbug and so many of us have asked before (though you guys never answer) “How does babby form?” But also, how does babby born? Why not all people have babby? Why only one type human bleed every month? Why only one type human spit sperm?

Eta- numbering got messed up too lazy to fix

How there humans, if we share 80% of genes with whales and dogs?

What I hear most these days is race is a social construct and is not real because we share all of our genes with each other, or at least 80%-90% of our genes with each other, that's at least, it can be more than 90%

Just look at this equation

We share at least 80%-90% of our genes with each other ---> race is a social construct and is not real

No, that's not why race is not real. The difference between gender and sex is like the difference between race and ethnicity. Ethnicity is real and biological. For example, you can find your ethnicity through a DNA test. There are higher intra-ethnic match rates for certain organ donation. Certain ethnicities are more prone to specific ailments as a result of their DNA (e.g. East Asians experience higher instances of alcohol intolerance). Ethnicity is why it's stupid when that one white guy say shit like "I don't see color", because I bet he puts on a ton of sunscreen before going to the beach.

Race socially constructed. Who is what race changes and shifts along with society. What is considered white in Hitler's Germany, vs. South Africa's Apartheid, vs. Trump's America is not exactly the same. It's only loosely based on ethnicity and is mostly used for political ends.

Tldr; race is to ethnicity as gender is to sex. Race and gender aren't real.

Biological sex is part of how our species functions.

Race is how humans have decided to classify each other based on arbitrary phenotypic traits (i.e. skin color, hair type). How people define race has changed over time and across different cultures. While people have had different ideas about gender roles, they have never had any different ideas about sex.

Females produce eggs. Males produce sperm. People who don't produce either still have (or had) the equipment to produce either sperm OR eggs, never both. Its really that simple. How do we determine what sexes are in non-human animals? or even in plants? By seeing which ones produce the eggs. If biological sex isn't real, then why can't I have a rooster lay eggs? If biological sex isn't real, the shouldn't a baby form from any combination of gametes, since they are 'basically the same'? The amount of genes being shared means absolutely nothing. There is in reality, only one single gene that matters, and that is the SRY gene. The SRY gene (located on the Y chromosome) triggers male development and its presence/absence determines what type of gamete an individual makes, and thus their sex.

Gender roles are not sex. Secondary sexual characteristics (i.e. facial hair, larger adam's apple, larger breasts, etc.) are not sex.

Well, by that logic, since us humans share more than 90% of our DNA with each other, then individuals don't exist. We're all actually the same person, those little differences in DNA don't matter at all.

humans share 99% of their DNA with chimps, so how can there be "human" & "chimp"?

this reminds me of climate change deniers who argue "how can 2% of carbon in the atmosphere have any substantial effect on climate?" – this line of argument posits that a small amount of something can only have a small effect.

6 minutes isn't a very long time, but 6 minutes without oxygen can cause brain damage or can even be fatal (at least in the majority of cases).

99%

Oh, I have a good one.

Let poster's own logic bite them back: by poster logic it will mean that if there only 0.3% of transgender people - and 99.7% are not, then transgender people do not exist! :D

[–]FlanJam 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not to mention something like 2% only seems small because of how people are accustomed to reading percentages. That's one of the problems with using a 0-100 scale for everything, its not very intuitive for those who aren't familiar with the context.

[–]kwallio 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh my god. Race and sex are not similar categories and you can't compare them like that. The y chromosome is literally just a vehicle for the sry gene but it has huge effects. PLEASE learn something about genetics and human development.

[–]DistantGlimmer 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

We share at least 80%-90% of our genes with each other ---> race is a social construct and is not real

Saying something is a social construct does not mean it is not real only that the way we perceive it is determined by social factors and not "nature". if you say race isn't real then you're saying racism isn't real. If you say sex isn't real then you're denying sexism.

It seems one's believing biological sex is real means one should believe in racial realism too?? So someone that believes biological sex is real and is not a social construct should believe race is real and is not a social construct either or else that would be hypocritical to say biological sex is not a social construct while race is, right?

No because sex and race are not the same - race is more comparable to gender than sex and race realism is more comparable to gender essentialism. Sexual dimorphism is easily biologically provable and even TRAs don't really completely deny it exists. The same is not true of alleged racial mental differences.

Race and gender are social constructs. Ethnicity and sex are not.

Race is for ethnicity what gender is for sex. You are comparing two things that belong in two different fields.
