Like, prostitutes are being harmed by the current state as another commenter in this thread mentioned. Clearly decriminalising has not made prostitution out of necessity any more consensual either.

Respecting the so-called choice to sell ones body in order to survive does not involve calling it consensual and the same as employment. People who scrub toilets don’t get ptsd from it.

Yes it does. Criminalising johns or brothel operators means that brothels go underground and become fertile ground for all manner of criminality. This is what we had before decriminalisation. How do you propose that legal brothels might work if every john faced criminal prosecution? Even street prostitution becomes more secretive because johns want to avoid prosecution. Under decriminalisation, street prostitution moved well-lit commercial areas subject to policing to prevent robbery and murder. People are much more likely to call the cops if it does not result in the loss of their business or their prosecution. Also, where do you draw the line? Sugar daddies? Tinder dates offering nice dinners?

I propose brothels don’t operate. It’s already been explained by another poster itt why it’s failing in NZ. Criminalise johns and pimps, use hefty fines to fund social services that remove women from prostitution so that the demand goes unmet. Without the need for it most women will not “choose” prostitution. Community drug and alcohol treatment, domestic violence shelters and cops/doctors/teachers/nurses/carers given better training to see signs of abuse. Payments for victims of family violence so they can leave without having to harm themselves via prostitution to fund their escape.

Despite the common idea that women will just always be prostitutes cause they like it and don’t wanna do something yucky like clean the school toilets, the majority of prostituted women do not choose it freely and want out.

Brothels just normalise prostituting women and mask it as a safe choice.

Do you really not see the difference between having dinner with a tinder date and having a man pay you forty bucks to ejaculate in your anus and slap you? Really? Prostitution isn’t two people making love and having satisfying orgasms lmao.
