I think you're right, and the move toward explicitly partisan spaces like Twitter and Parler is an attempt to split us back up into two camps. From the perspective of elites, the internet is scary because it can reveal things like Epstein and the Panama Papers that would have been swept under the rug before. If they can force people back into controlled ideological echo chambers, they can regain control over the national discourse. In theory at least.
