Despite these differences, there is ideological agreement between the extreme Left and Right in Serbia on one point: anti-globalism. This was most evident during the protests outside Serbia’s parliament in July 2020, when demonstrators carrying icons of saints stood next to protesters with banners of Che Guevara and Karl Marx.

The protests were triggered by government plans to slow the spread of COVID-19, including another lockdown. But also driving these demonstrations of students, anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers and citizens was discontent over potential recognition of Kosovo’s independence. Their point of convergence is anti-globalism.
