If I recall correctly there are security researchers whose only job is to confirm something like this can't happen in any app which claims to have end to end encryption.

So if this is true, their claims are no longer trustworthy and we cant trust telegram, threema and so on as well?

Whatsapp and Telegram are apparently not open source so these would be only internal security audits I'd assume - nobody else has access to the code without some decompile sorcery.... Signal is open source it seems, so anyone can audit it.

No experience with this modern stuff though, only with GPG :)

That is very bad news, But just because it is able to be cracked does not mean the people behind Telegram or other similar platforms will read them (Although likely will)
