Once the frontrunner, the Pirate Party is taking a pasting from the ruling ANO party, leaving its progressive centrist coalition in third place two months before the election. But Pirate leader Bartos is not giving up hope of changing Czech politics for the good.

But a vicious fightback by populist Prime Minister Andrej Babis has dented PaS’s support. The billionaire premier has been busy warning the country’s older and more conservative voters that the progressive-liberal Pirates are actually an authoritarian neo-Marxist mob hellbent on forcing them to become vegan and share their homes with migrants.

In the current environment, Bartos warns, just about any issue can be abused in such a way.

This time, however, there might be something to those proclamations. Babis, desperate to evade charges over the misuse of EU funds and dependent on the scheming pro-Russian President Milos Zeman, is viewed by many as a danger to Czechia’s liberal tradition.
