The most economical way I have found to cook is to base everything you make around sales. I use the Flipp app to check specials at local places and figure out what to make from that.
And the priciest things are proteins. You may be able to eat for £1 a serving, but are you hitting your minimum protein requirements?
Whey isolate comes in handy to add protein without paying meat prices.

I didn't know what it's like in the US but here pork is often cheaper than chicken at the moment. Although chicken on the bone with skin on can be cheaper
You just always have to keep checking the prices all the time. You can't rely on common sense.
