William Goldman (novelist, screenwriter) wrote two books about Hollywood, screenwriting, and how movies are made in general. I loved them. You might remember he wrote the screenplay for Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, one of my personal favorites. Anyway, in one of his later books he talks about how the director of a movie is way overrated. I think he named five people who were as important as the director: the screenwriter, the production designer, the editor, and of course the director. I had it before but now forget the fifth one. Was it the costume designer? It was an eye-opener for me, as was this short film.

I just mentioned Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid the other day: /s/memes/comments/6g9x/covid_lockdown_freedom/p0dl

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Goldman 's prolific works make me feel completely inadequate. I should really quit YouTube and SaidIt for a while and finish my 6 screenplays in progress - or even the one important one.

Also, which books?

I would agree with your 4 important people and add producer. Of course there are so many more too, but they don't shape it as much as serve the movie.

I don't actually agree with This Guy Edits in their reasons for renaming the Kuleshov Effect, but this video explains the effect AND the history of women in editing which are both still very interesting, though not the best documentation of either. I didn't actually expect anyone to notice this post or this new sub, but I'm glad you did so I could share my little opinion for the record.

Chronologically, the two books were near the end of his output. He did two in a similar vein but the one I'm thinking of is NOT Which Lie Did I Tell? but the other one about Hollywood. I gave the book away.

Okay, it is this one, using your link: Goldman, William (1983). Adventures in the Screen Trade. Abacus. ISBN 978-0-349-10705-9

Yes, producer is of course the one I forgot. Doh. "In Hollywood nobody knows anything," he keeps saying, meaning nobody knows what's going to work.

Now going to the Halal shop and buy some (a lot of) beans and rice
