Show notes:

Making John Wayne Asian is hard. Let’s talk about how difficult it was to make The Conqueror (with guest host Ryan Uytdewilligen @ryanuytdewilligen), from Howard Hughes forcing animals, actors, and sand into production, to the cast and crew inadvertently becoming nuclear fallout downwinders.

Sorry I missed this post a year ago.

One of my old faves, Tim Hamilton's Truth In Advertising:

I generally agree with your sentiment, however, all TV spots and music videos are also short films - some even have brief narratives.

The problem with Hollywood is they have forgotten how to make movies but they are getting good at making woke excuses. When Clint Eastwood made a movie about queers we got "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". When the wokie queer new guys made "Bros" it was an atomic bomb. A movie with queers in it is a whole different animal than a movie about being queers. Got that.

Rhythm is VERY underutilized in editing and narration. I didn't spend a week composing my LeverMind script for nothing.

Even my recent video had rhythm even before I added the music. Didn't even have to tweak the edit, though I could have fixed a few minor things that would take a lot of effort, if I thought it was worth it for more than just a week's promo. https://tube.4aem.com/w/9f584bde-91be-403d-858e-a0d001682df9.

As I wrote to Winton:

So I had fits and starts until this morning when I added music and it all flowed and seemed so much better. I had removed much of the static, wind, Canadian geese, and treble so we could hear Csaba better, but it was still very poor audio. The music helped mask that - and add energy. It may be too much, but there's not much to save, and his accent is strong, adding complications.

Initially I just wanted the opening/closing sample, reminiscent of the Optimus Prime Transformer, but once I dropped the track in, before I cropped it, I discovered 4 very coincidental music syncs to the existing edit that I didn't even have to tweak. Seemed like fate. But I understand if folks may not like the D&B, so I'm willing to do another version if needed.

5 Things That Make A Film Look Low Budget - Shane Stanley (14:18) ~ Film Courage by JasonCarswell in Filmmaking

I see so many expensive films now where it will suddenly jump out that it looks like cheap tv for one scene and I'm not really always sure what it is. I think having everything in focus and everything well lit is part of it.

Certainly try to knock the depth of focus back a notch and think about making lighting more natural and/or more dramatic. Your job as a director is partly to direct the viewer, not just the cast and crew. You have to direct them where they should be looking on that big wide screen not try to show off all your lovely actors and beautiful sets all the time. You can do this with focus, you can do this with lighting but you can also do it by making the actor who they should focus on move more than everyone else in the scene and tricks like that.

If you watch expensive adverts they actually get it right a lot more often than films because they are masters of directing the viewer's attention rather than just trying to make something look good. Kubrick made The Shining after studying advertising techniques. He didn't have to rely on lighting or focus because he could use all the other tricks they use to direct attention, travelling with the characters, colour, movement, montage, etc.

Agreed. It's 1/3 the experience with visuals and concepts (story, characters, themes, etc).

And whatever that filmstock that was used between '65 and '75 really sucked. Use real film or go for video.

Chronologically, the two books were near the end of his output. He did two in a similar vein but the one I'm thinking of is NOT Which Lie Did I Tell? but the other one about Hollywood. I gave the book away.

Okay, it is this one, using your link: Goldman, William (1983). Adventures in the Screen Trade. Abacus. ISBN 978-0-349-10705-9

Yes, producer is of course the one I forgot. Doh. "In Hollywood nobody knows anything," he keeps saying, meaning nobody knows what's going to work.

I just mentioned Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid the other day: /s/memes/comments/6g9x/covid_lockdown_freedom/p0dl

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Goldman 's prolific works make me feel completely inadequate. I should really quit YouTube and SaidIt for a while and finish my 6 screenplays in progress - or even the one important one.

Also, which books?

I would agree with your 4 important people and add producer. Of course there are so many more too, but they don't shape it as much as serve the movie.

I don't actually agree with This Guy Edits in their reasons for renaming the Kuleshov Effect, but this video explains the effect AND the history of women in editing which are both still very interesting, though not the best documentation of either. I didn't actually expect anyone to notice this post or this new sub, but I'm glad you did so I could share my little opinion for the record.

William Goldman (novelist, screenwriter) wrote two books about Hollywood, screenwriting, and how movies are made in general. I loved them. You might remember he wrote the screenplay for Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, one of my personal favorites. Anyway, in one of his later books he talks about how the director of a movie is way overrated. I think he named five people who were as important as the director: the screenwriter, the production designer, the editor, and of course the director. I had it before but now forget the fifth one. Was it the costume designer? It was an eye-opener for me, as was this short film.
