Turkey and Greece have competing ambitions over gas reserves and they disagree profoundly over who has rights to key areas of the Eastern Mediterranean. They have laid claim to overlapping areas, arguing they belong to their respective continental shelves.

This is not an accurate description of what is happening. For decades Turkey has been placing demands on Greek territories, claiming that Turkey should have a percentage of the Aegean sea "just because". Which actually is the usual way Turkey acts, as the same has been happening in Cyprus, Syria and Libya and other countries as well.
