The left and right are both wrong about Squid Game

Basically there are been a huge rang of takes on Squid Games because it's actually just a fun, dumb adventure/thriller that's been done 100 times before so you can read anything you like into it.

However the worst takes have been around diversity. The left piled on to say that SG proved that you don't need white leads to be successful so it's a win for diversity. Then the right countered that the series is literally lead by the main majority of Korea except one token Pakistani character who's main personality trait is being non threatening.

They both miss that diversity clearly is a big theme in SG but unfortunately it's the type of diversity the left don't like, diversity of opinion. Our heros are a team of misfits. They succeed because they come from a range of backgrounds, experiences, ages, politics and beliefs, very different to the left's love of diversity of looks but with the same world view.

I think you're entirely correct, the modern left and right are both shall we say, mostly interested in shoving the world into preconceived notions rather than learning from it.

Besides, it's obvious about squids :-)

Nope. Not watching that either. I wish I could erase all video games and all the BS they have spawned from the Earth forever. If I am ever in charge of the giant space arc video games will be banned. Of course all music ever played during MTV's early years will be banned as well.

I'm not a big fan of foreign movies generally but Squid Games was actually solid. It's well dubbed in English. Other watchable foreign media off the top of my head is The Heist, a Spanish TV series that started out strong, gets pretty soap opera-ish later though. The Meg is a Chinese and American sci fi movie. Doesn't have the best rating ever but it's a high budget action movie about a giant shark, that gets my vote. And Russian media is actually producing, not exactly great movies, but stuff more in line with American production quality now. Better than Us was an okay watch on Netflix.

Can’t stand watching dubbed shows. I tried with the iron chef decades ago, it is awful for me.

I watched SG with subtitles. Mostly because I know from experience Korean overacting can get so extreme no English speaking actor can fit it without the whole thing looking ridiculous.

    Which might play out more in the next series because obviously the way to escape karma is to forgive yourself and let go of your fears and desires while this series ended with the main character unable to get over what happened to him and what he did.

    yeah compare that to the recent failed eternals movie. Lot of diversity, black people, gay people etc, but they're immortal aliens who treat humans like cattle, it's symbolic of our rich overlords. People don't want to watch that.

    I enjoyed it but didn't look for politic meaning. It was a fun show although my biggest takeaway is that Koreans need to stop borrowing so much damn money.
