American schools are incredibly safe. For some demographics, children are significantly safer at school than at home. Parents, likely driven by a sensationalistic media, think they’re more dangerous than they are.

I have only known of 1 death in a school in my life and I'm now retired. It was at an old school of mine years after my parents moved us. A kid was wrestling and got his neck broken. DOA. There was a girl at my elementary school that got her foot run over by a bus once. It didn't hurt her.
