The post title has skepticism. Why more than any other decentralized alternative?

IPFS has Filecoin.

ZeroNet has Namecoin.

Holochain is working on something.

Steemit, Minds, etc. offer monetization for quality independent content.

Even SaidIt accepts donations and rewards.

Money is the root of evil but it is not the evil itself. And it makes the flat earth go round.

I like open source everything, but realize I can't realize my dreams of having my own federated server(s) without money - both for the gear and for the upkeep and connections.

Agreed, but most things can be run very cheaply. We can't let the corporations rule the web over us not spending $5/mo. I'm sure some not-for-profits will pop up and offer federated services at their cost too. Alas these are the drawbacks of federated.

Most folks in Canada aren't as poor as I am (or as free).

Most folks in Canada don't have the same priorities either (being sheeple) and don't care about their corporate overlords, and those who do aren't too interested in "donating" to or investing in their freedom.

It's a paradoxical problem. And they're too distracted, divided, tired, and unmotivated to do anything about it.
