That's pretty neat. Keep us updated on this! How far out is your farthest contact so far in miles?

A man that was about 40 miles away in a different city answered my call and we had a clearly audible conversation. I am mostly interested in reaching local people so that in times of emergency, I could help, or for when other communications are cut I could share information with people I could meet in person, if needed.

But I also heard someone as far as 700 miles away, but that was through a radio that the man had connected to the internet, so part of the distance of our communication was through the internet, which then was sent out again as a radio wave in a nearby city.

Radio is very cool.

It’s the last really uncensored form of communication.

I'm not a hammie but I have considered learning about radio. I am more interested is software defined radio, I think it has a lot more possibilities. For a bit I had a trucker CB radio but never got around to tuning it, so my reception was shit compared to others and I just couldn't get motivated to put work into it.

I always thought CB needs to get into the digital age. Has HAM finally gone digital? Is there anything innovative happening?

I think there is some newer digital stuff with the HAM but I can't remember much about it. Some older radio heads were complaining about it taking over and polluting the airwaves, but it sounded interesting to me and kinda revolutionary.

However, in the US it can't be encrypted or it's illegal, and would probably get shut down pretty quick. Would be interested to know how to do that though if SHTF

Pretty fucked up that it can't be encrypted. Sounds like a violation of the 4th amendment given that the only reason for that law is to allow unreasonable search.

You can't even own encrypted walkie talkies in the US.

Now I want one. 😠

Yeah I think that's the same rule from the FCC

Old guys don't want to become obsolete. Digital will allow for a lot better use of the spectrum.

How much did it all cost? Wondering about setting up something myself

[–]In-the-clouds[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

$204, which included taxes and shipping to my house. That cost was for the radio, antenna, and mount. Solar power system not included.

Specifics:

Radio: TYT TH-8600 Dual Band Mini Mobile Transceiver 2M/70CM 25W Amateur Two Way Radio w/Cable

Antenna: Tram 140MHz-170MHz + 430MHz-470MHz Dual Band NMO

What do you talk about with your radio friends?

[–]In-the-clouds[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I just got this station set up for emergency use, so I can help people, if possible, and if God leads me to do so. Our world is being hit with storms of all kinds and there will be times when normal communications will be cut. People are stirring up hatred for their fellow man, so of course we are going to see riots, especially in the cities. America is turning into another Nazi Germany, because of propaganda, and because the heart of man has grown cold. The nation will suffer calamity after calamity. And those that incite others to violence against their fellow man will perish. They will not escape, unless they repent now. Now is the acceptable time to repent and turn to Jesus, who said: love one another.

To test this form of communication today I made a call and talked with a man about the Hernando De Soto bridge, which he recently drove across.

America is turning into another Nazi Germany

You say that like it's a bad thing. Jesus and Uncle Adolf go pretty well together.

Jesus died on the cross because of his greater than great love for all, including those killed and tormented in World War II and those that will be killed and tormented now in our generation.

True. But think about the Weimar republic literally being run by demons. Then were prostituting children and all sorts of stuff.

[–]noice 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Nice, that's really not bad

Can you listen to marine radio using your ham radio?

Just fyi, I understand that you can only xmit using marine radio while you are on the water..

In case of social breakdown, you might want to have a marine radio so you can communicate with ships..

I am currently in Arkansas, so I am not close to the sea. Perhaps you mean well. There will be social breakdown, but I am prepared to communicate with God through prayer. There will also be EMP attacks, so I do not know how long these radios will be functional. God is always able to save, but he requires repentance. When the social breakdown, as you call it, happens, men will only have time to fight for survival and will find it almost impossible to repent and to begin to trust the Lord for all their needs, since they have not made time to practice their faith. It's best to repent now and do not delay to receive Jesus as your Savior.
