How could fediverse ban anyone? It's decentralized. Setup your own server. Other servers can ban you but fediverse can't, unless i am missing something.

I recommend re-commenting in the other post.

To my understanding the fediverse is about mirroring select content.

If I create a host node and my interests are boats and trees, I would share and receive to mirror content with like-minds. If others sites have boats and trees and porn and nazis I'm not sure how selective the filters would be, and I'm not interested in co-hosting porn, so I might block them - and down-label them. If someone new tries to join, I would see that others have blocked/labeled them for their content, and without judging for myself I may just go along to get along because if I were to accept them then I could in turn be blocked even though all I've done is loosely associate with wrongthink.

That's my VERY limited understanding of it.

It's always seemed inevitable that the federation would be divided tribally - even if only by reputation alone. Theoretically, neutral overlap should be allowed, but intolerance rules.

There is no mirroring functionality. You post what you want and you subscribe to who you want. Others can post to your profile only if you allow them. Setup an account on Mastodon or one of many others and try it out. I think this will be an important technology in the long run, or some variation on it.
