It's worth noting that they're touching on the wider "Fediverse" (the inspiration for my name) here. Mastodon is a platform that lets you run your own Fediverse instance, but you don't need to be running Mastodon to get on the Fediverse. You just need a software suite that understands the ActivityPub language.

It's also worth noting that there tend to be two kinds of people on a lot of Fediverse instances: those that hate Twitter because they think they're "too tolerant of Nazis", and those that hate Twitter because they "don't support free speech".

Sites like Mastodon.social are populated with mostly the former, sites like freespeechextremist.com tend to be populated with the latter. That being said, there are a ton of interest instances dedicated to particular topics that are worth checking out
