The thing about decentralization and peer to peer networks is that they are difficult to secure. When a centralized power is given the authority to manage the data, they may abuse that power but at least there are conventions of trust and you can expect a certain level of security. With peer to peer networks, you are always open to security vulnerabilities. Either way, they serve an important purpose and must be the future if we want to preserve freedom.

Security is of course important, but that's not all there is to it. Verification of hashes and IPFS are important solutions that verify that your content is not corrupted. The more people wake up and the more people that use it the safer you are. Like schools of fish we are collectively better off, unless they develop a totalitarian net, decide they don't need us as debt slaves anymore, and collectively we are powerless against their tyranny.

IPFS is awesome but doesn't it expose your IP publicly on the network? If they could find a way to obfuscate that, IPFS could have a good shot of becoming the defacto standard like the world wide web

I don't know enough about it or the privacy aspect - but maybe if TOR and torrents/eD2K/KAD and IPFS were combined you might have a serious contender.

I've been using it recently, its like using the internet in the 90's because everything is static and there isn't much content but I like it. Filecoin is also the only cryptocurrency I'm interested in because all it does is monetize storage on the IPFS network so people have an incentive to preserve the content.

maybe if TOR and... IPFS were combined you might have a serious contender.

They have plans to do this in the future.

I love the idea behind Filecoin - and all of Protocol Labs work. They've been suppressed on Wikipedia, but my out-of-date InfoGalactic article is mostly better.

The problem now is that TOR only has so many entrance/exit ports and info can be sniffed out by those who control them. If more people adopted TOR or whatever fusion is upcoming then there might be a chance for a legit libre alternative.

By the way, do you remember LimeWire? I just downloaded WireShare, the open source preservation of the good parts of the digital STD that was LimeWire. Its giving me fun flashbacks but there are so few people on the network now, its sad. That is another downside to it too, how do you truly preserve content on a p2p network like that?

Before torrents took over I was all about the eMule, better than LimeWire and similar stuff.

Also, I don't trust SourceForge 100%. GitHub is the better site to share, IMO, though it appears both are valid and "official" according to the less than 100% honest Wikipedia.

You're a smart one, they are totally known to spread malicious software but they've long since rebranded. It was just the first link to pop up on the search for "WireShark download"

I didn't know about their "rebranding". It will be a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time before I trust anyone who went bad for a while.
