Judging by the pic the locked-in syndrome is something she didn't always have.

There must be a cause behind that and a reason she wasn't set up with proper medical care and a social worker when it happened.

That's the impression I got too. Her parents are elderly, and talking care of an adult child who can't move is a lot of work. I have some sympathy for them, but locked in syndrome sounds like living hell. I hope someone will have the decency to put me down if that happens to me.
