The original DnD and ADnD where based on murder hobo's and hirelings. Tenser of Tensers Transformation had hirelings. Bigby and his crazy team where all played by the same player. Although originally you could be a murder hobo, it wasnt the best way to play because 1 GP = 1 XP, so looting things was far better than murdering things.
For example, in the original Red Box DnD Rules https://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/gaming_and_diversion/RPG/TSR%201011%20Basic%20Rules%20Set.pdf
Goblins are worth 5xp each. It might have 1 gp if you are lucky. You get 1 xp for 1 GP so if you could sneak in, avoid all encounters, and escape with all the gold you level up super fast.

A long long time ago I played in a game with my friends where the DM had made a custom world where all the Gods were the players and their personalities. In fact, I was playing Heinz Watties, a Cleric of Tiwaking - God of Light, Healing, Lightning. We all started as level 1 and, after many many adventures we were trying to stop a portal from a negative energy plane from opening. Our Paladin of Stuart was the only one with the physical key to prevent the plane from opening, but near the end of the adventure he and all his belongs were petrified and turned to stone.

So we lost. It was really sad. We had another campaign with new characters later in the same world about 6 years after our failure. Tiwaking the God had become depressed and withdrew from the world. Stuart had become a barbarian God due to the failure to save the world, and one of the other characters had switched side to the evil invaders and were helping them conquer the world.

It was a good game. I miss those days.
