Dealing with people's ignorance and fear of accountability is something that every historian has to deal with. A lot of people lose their faith in the objectivity of ethics and start seeing everything as a struggle, so they become more and more ruthless as a result, but ethics are a sacred side of reality and no one can escape them.
People's lives and actions are always judged by ultimate reality. I don't know what lies on the other side when it comes to the transcendental, but ethics are a real power in reality and I think the role of a philosopher is make them rule society.
