I think being able to grasp reality and how complex it can be is one of the most basic skills people need to learn. The whole point of engaging in debates is reaching the truth and people can have a lot of difficulties when it comes to figuring out what is true and what is false.
People's ignorance can be something dangerous. I've seen how people can become arrogant and claim their vices are more relevant than their responsibilities when they are not moderated by authorities. People can easily fall into obscurantism even if they don't realize it too and the truth suffers...
I suppose protecting the truth is the duty of all historians and they have a very relevant role in society.
