Recently, while talking with my churchgoing grandfather over the decay and collapse of our home (northeast US), the intricacies of our situation, he told me something like; "God asks that we be light to others. If all the light were in one place, the rest of the world would be cold and dark". The problem, though, is that a thousand candle flames scattered about in the open will all, in time, be doused by nature, or will simply burn out. Better to gather them together, under shelter, those thousand little flames. Throw in some kindling and a few dry logs and soon we'll have a proper fire!
The many "Ark projects" that are beginning to spring up must, ultimately, be brought together under a greater "Project Ararat" (a New Byzantium, or New Eden - pick your metaphor)
And what a shame it is, all the talk of an exodus into the south. I hate the heat! Actually, I have the feeling that most of these new communities based in the south are best thought of as temporary havens, as warm, and even mild, regions around the world seem to inevitably give rise to decadence. Of course many would be quick to point out that any industrialized society could be thought of as a 'mild region', but better to set as the foundation for a kingdom a snow white mountain top rather than sandy beaches....so this general exodus into the south seems to me like a sort of 'Ark' phase, part of the greater, culminative, Byzantine undertaking that must become.
