And it's also depressing because a lot of people do not deserve this. Why did God forsake us all? :-(

The majority of Americans have forsaken religion, so they deserve to suffer, so God is doing the right thing. For those with the sense to study and understand scripture, there is always a sound way forward. Jeremiah had it considerably worse than we do, so I wouldn't complain too much.

Why aren't the people who understand spared from going to gulags? Why do they have to suffer just because the majority want it?

I'm not very religious, by the way. I have trouble with faith.
