You're correct about the obsession part. As for me, I'm happy to have both idealized and subversive art. This is one place where I have to break from Ayn Rand, who seemed to believe that art could be judged by Objectivist analysis, at least to some degree.
Anyway, this dollhouse is only art in the sense that it is the product of human conception brought into a tangible form. It undoubtedly was designed by committee, rather than being the vision of an individual artist. As such, I imagine it is an impure representation of its original concept. After all, it must be salable right?

This was probably the recommendation of a PR agency.
It gives Barbie a better image, and Mattel gets PR coverage.
This is money well-spent for Mattel. There are plenty of examples of this.
