But why does the Christ need to atone for anyone or everyone?

Because we are all shitty

What does that mean?
Let's, for the sake of argument, grant you the (weird/masochistic) claim that 'we are all shitty'.
Does that the Christ 'atones for EVERYONE' suddenly make everyone ... 'not shitty'?
How does it all work?

All have sinned and fallen, as Lucifer did when he knew God, but turned against him.
The beings here in the world of God's adversary voluntarily left God and fell with Lucifer.... It's the original sin.... the apostasy from God. The only way for that guilt to be removed is if we voluntarily return to God. As you voluntarily rejected God, you must also voluntarily choose to return to God, if you want to return to heaven. God, your Creator, is invisible, so how can you choose to return to someone who is invisible? Jesus was manifested on earth as God's image. God's spirit was in the man Jesus when he atoned for our sins on the cross. If you acknowledge what God did for you, the curse is broken. If you voluntarily follow Jesus, then you are reconciled to God. Otherwise, you continue to belong to his adversary.

Wait, the deity has an adversary in a monotheism?
And let's just have a look at how it all works:
Jesus (who is God) sacrificed himself on the cross, to appease ... well ... Himself (since monotheism), so that He, Himself, would forgive us shitty humans for our sins.
And you're OK with that story.

the deity has an adversary in a monotheism?
Yes, and each of us act like his adversary when we work to destroy the faith. The created spirit, Lucifer, rebelled against God. Knowing there is one God, how does this challenge you?

In physics, you know that every action has an equal and opposite action. Likewise, every one of our sins has a consequence. Are you saying that God should be less than perfect and require no consequences for the rebellion against him? Should he also cancel the laws of physics?
It is a bitter-sweet story. I am sorry that we rebelled against God and that it was necessary for Jesus to take the consequence of our apostasy on himself, but there is no other way. Man's guilt is too much for us to atone for this rebellion in our own power. Only the perfect man, Jesus, could take our guilt from us. I also see by his choice that Jesus is incredibly merciful and loving. We can all return to him. He will in no wise cast out any who come to him. I can imagine no other King that is better than the one that lay his life down for his people.

Knowing there is one God, how does this challenge you?
Well, there's the antagonist god person(?), then the saints and then the armies of angels and demons, etc.
There does seem to be lots of magical and invisible beings around that 'lone' dictator-deity.
In another religion, these might be called major or minor 'deities'.

I agree that eventually, all will be saved. But the only way to be saved is to voluntarily take up your cross, and follow Jesus. For some of the beings, this will take an eternity. God can even save from hell, as it says in the Psalms, but so much pain and misery could be avoided if people make the choice today.
