What you're not understanding, just like the Pharisees, is that the whole Old Testament narrative is myths. The stories are meant to teach lessons, not record history. If you don't believe me, then why does Paul seem to think exactly this in Galatians 4?

Your own book has Jesus saying "my kingdom is not of this world", yet you think it is, just like the Pharisees who killed him when he wouldn't take over the world.

But it is his kingdom. Israel and Judah are repeatedly called "the kingdom of YHWH". So no, we are not meant to conquer those lands.

Tell me, those who want to be under the law, don't you listen to the law? It is written that Abraham had two sons, one with the slave woman and one with the free. But the one who is of the slave woman is born according to the flesh; but the one of the free woman through promise. These things are an allegory: they are two contracts: one from Mount Sinai giving birth into slavery; the other giving birth far above all rule, authority, power, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come--she is our mother. Because of this we are not of the slave woman, but of the free.
