A friend shared this in email. Comments?:

I'm told "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh Mcdowell is a good read. A former sceptic that set out to disprove the bible (in an attempt to save his daughter from her religious conversion). Long story short the more he dug to disprove the bible the more he was convinced it was accurate. We can discuss interpretation later LOL.

That's the problem with inerrancy. There's plenty in the Bible that is downright dangerous and evil, Jeremiah 8:8 even says so. In contrast there is nothing to support inerrancy, nor a designation of writings that belong in the canon even if it were so.

So?

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

So what?

[–]fschmidt 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Yes, so what? The Bible isn't a mathematical proof. It is allowed to have contradictions as long as it does its job of promoting good societies. So posting contradictions is pointless.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I didn't say there was a point, nor need for mathematical proof, other than having general knowledge about this imperfect book written by men that is revered so much, perhaps too much.

Much like the Bible, we're all walking talking contradictions full of hypocrisy, juxtapositions, and paradoxes. Without exception.

Telling the average Christian moron that the Bible is imperfect is like telling a 4-year-old that there is no Santa Claus - it is pointlessly cruel.

this imperfect book written by men that is revered so much, perhaps too much.

It is far less revered by the general population than it was 200 years ago, and that is a large part of the modern problem.

As bad a you may find SaidIt, I'm pretty sure we can agree that the average folks here are at least above the average uninformed pleb and above average Christian morons, thus capable of hearing that there is no Santa Claus.

It is far less revered by the general population than it was 200 years ago, and that is a large part of the modern problem.

This moot point may be so, especially for the average uninformed plebs. Now if you could turn around Hollywood (mission impossible) or YouTube (ditto) you might have a suitable moral/ethical and decentralized bottom-up replacement for the Bible. (I'd start by adding a MetaVote™ system or something better than the simplistic up/down rankings to better gauge the content to be appropriately filtered and promoted (by who's subjective values?).)

Almost any idea can come from the Bible since it's so full of contradictions and word salads. Orthodoxy is determined by the church's picking and choosing, and it tries to intimidate people into not questioning their narrative.

[–]Vulptex 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It doesn't do a great job of that. All the interpolations attempting to make it such usually just end up turning it into a word salad. At that point everything is just decided by the church.

Every contradiction in the bible boils down to either using a garbage "translation", taking things out of context, or failure to comprehend the written words.

There are none. This story has been done to death and there are still none.

Believe what you like and take your pick of Bible quotes about blind eyes to see.

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (16 children)

Jeremiah 8:8 begs to differ. The only way to get inerrancy to work is to really stretch interpretations and just ignore the many problems that still remain.

taking things out of context

you make my argument for me thanks

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (14 children)

The context is chapter 7, which condemns a few false commandments that are actually found in our Bible. So you can't say it's not referring to our Bible. And if you accept Jesus, you have to accept more falsification, given how many times he goes against the Old Testament.

Your only authority for "inerrant scripture" is the Roman Catholic church in the 4th century AD, and perhaps 16th century AD Protestant reformers who dropped the apochrypha.

[–]iamonlyoneman 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

Miss the point of the passage harder.

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (12 children)

Jeremiah 7:22 For I didn't tell your fathers or command them, on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, over words of burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Yet our 5 books of Moses are obsessed with burnt offerings and sacrifices. How is this possible? Because

Jeremiah 8:8 How can you say "We are wise and Yahuweh's law is with us"? Look, the lying pen of scribes made it into a lie.

And there it is, spelled out plainly. And if this book is inerrant, then this statement that it is not inerrant must also be inerrant, which means that it is not.

[–]iamonlyoneman 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

If you intentionally fail to grasp what is being discussed, then you can find arguments for all sorts of things in the bible or any book. That doesn't make a contradiction it just means you're pitiful.

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

You are the one who is ignoring what's right in front of you. Your only defense this whole time has been, basically, "you're wrong and I'm right".

I demonstrated my point. You're just turning your head and plugging your ears.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

He believes he knows it all.

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I'm a heretic --> I'm wrong --> I'm a heretic --> I'm wrong --> etc.

[–]iamonlyoneman 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I'm sorry you insist on being wrong, but I take satisfaction in knowing the Bible is a more reliable authority on itself than you. What's that verse about "private interpretation?" LOL

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I gave you the Bible's authority on itself. It agrees with me. Your only support for your claim is because you say so, or you would demonstrate it instead of screaming "la la la la la no you're wrong I'm right!".

That "scripture is not open to private interpretation" verse was added by Catholic editors in the second century to make everyone obey them and their church against the spirit. But if it's not open to private interpretation, then you must take it as it is, and that includes Jeremiah 7-8 whether you like it or not. You can't pick and choose.
