Seems like China might use this to see how well there school system works. However it seems more that this kid was genuinely interested in science from a young age and was lucky enough to have access to resources to foster his scientific studies. He could just ask a scientist what a protein is and study it in a lab using expensive instruments. Which is what the article addresses at the end. That there are probably thousands of kids like this wanting to cure cancer or tumors but most don't have access to a lab full of scientists and expensive instruments.
