Magnus Carlsen is 31??? Man. Im getting old. I remember when he was 14 and played against Kasparov in 2004

Magnus Carlsen will launch his new campaign to achieve a 2900 Fide rating, the Everest of overall tournament performance, when the world champion makes his first move on Saturday (1pm start) in the opening round of the “chess Wimbledon” at Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee. Reaching the round number after being previously twice stalled at 2882 is the 31-year-old’s major target for 2022.

After four successful defences of his global crown, Carlsen says he will only do so again in 2023 if his opponent is the current No 2, Alireza Firouzja, 18, or another grandmaster from the new generation.

I used to play against this as a kid. I would smash it. I still smash it now for practice. I miss the old computer chess programs like Battle Chess. They were easy to beat, not like todays computer programs

Magnus Carlsen is the best and most versatile chess player of all time. Its actually his versatility that makes him the best player ever, but in terms of raw talent the best player was probably José Raúl Capablanca, Paul Morphy, or Mir Sultan Khan. Mikhail Tal and Bobby Fischer were probably the best Human chess players ever, that is: Chess players from the era before computers. Gary Kasparov is most certainly the greatest living player though.

The Queen's Gambit: A Fairy Tale (40:26) ~ Men Are Good! by JasonCarswell in Chess

I didn't realize it until a month after, and even still I don't. It's a phat number. I'm too immature to be that old. Also, I lost a dozen years to Big Pharma poisons. A decade is lost in the fog. I don't know if that's too much personal information, if that's what you mean by "so open".

I play all my YouTube videos at 2x or more (except music). But only 2x on Waterfox until I can find an addon to go faster. It's like reading with ears. Chess videos are tedious. Glancing is fine, but I want to process it. I still need time, engagement, and focus for that. OCD rules me, so not for now. It's challenging, but not it the way I need these days.

My neighbour always wants me to play chess games too. Maybe. Until this year I simply always said, "I don't do games." Evidently I make exceptions. He also wants me to learn his primary game for decades: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion_II:_Battle_at_Antares I keep meaning to make a post about it asking about good tutorials, if anyone wants to play online and/or knows of other games he (70+) and I (a non-gamer) might enjoy, together or apart.

I didn't realize you're 50 years old. It's cool that you're so open. If chess videos go too fast, perhaps a better way to study games is to get the PGN and play the game out on a physical board.

It's the same for me, I learned to play chess as a kid. And I picked up on it this year as well. We've got to play a game some time, what do you say?

I learned the game as a kid. My likely last game was just after my 21st birthday... until this summer, just before my 50th. My older neighbour upstairs loves to play. He's not bright on much, but he's a hellova life-long player. So now I'm more interested in it. Before next summer I'm going to make him a better game table, a second 4'x4' game table in the back yard with 6" tiles and figures to be determined (ie. plastic bottles of various shapes and sizes filled with water or sand until I make simple wood figures), and I have a perfect place in my apartment to eventually make and stow a roll-out chess table, so he can come visit me.

I'm not the fastest player, and my moods and focus make a big difference. I like to study the boards and his videos explain it clearly but it's all so fast that I don't enjoy it - yet. Maybe next year.

This Christmas I'm going to take him a thumbdrive with The Queens Gambit, The Curse Of Oak Island, and The Detectorists. I loved the latter, and might watch the former with him. I said he's not bright - he has faith in the lottery and loves metal detecting videos, including where people throw big magnets into the water to find treasures. Sure it's possible, but it's not fucking likely.

Ah, are you a chess player as well? I love Agadmator's videos and have been binge watching them recently.

that is really cool, thanks for sharing it. I feel like I'd have to watch it, pause it, compare it to the record of who was playing who at the time to really understand in detail the dynamic at work in the graphic. What stood out to me is that Rubinstein and Schleter do not appear to jump up over anyone the way I thought based on things I read. I'm surprised Andersen was never up over the top, I thought he was best for a while. What the graph shows in the Botvinnik era makes sense to me, especially Smyslov and Tal. Tal's performance on that graph is nice to see, how his use of the "sham sacrifice" and psychology early on worked so well, and then when players caught on how he adjusted and climbed back up near the top.

I could watch it over and over for little details, like looking for Smsylov in the 80s when he found some ideas in the Cambridge Springs. Also, I want to look over Najdorf's games because he was way up there for a while.

Thanks for sharing that!

lichess.org I would use. What do you mean by speed chess? What kind of time control are you using if at all?

Here's an idea to continue the conversation on chess... Post content related to the game - the history, documentaries, movies, songs, etc. along with your review on them. Also images: memes, political chess memes, sexy chess photos (no porn), glam shots, organic shots, whatever you thing is beautiful and worth sharing about chess.

The banner I composited for /s/PoliticalAnalysis/ includes a chessboard globe image I found online. There's one with text. and one without text.

I didn't even know about bullet chess or blitz chess. I just play chess or speed chess with my neighbour on occasion. He usually beats me but I'm improving and yesterday I got a stalemate on the second round. I'm not good enough to think beyond 2 or 3 moves though, at best.

Where would you play bullet chess? In chat or on a site?
