I prefer paperback because I like the physical material, and loading the digital card with books is annoying. Not a huge fan of e-readers, they're too single-task.

Most things I read are on the computer. So really I prefer a free copy of a book, read from a website or pdf on a laptop or tablet.

The evidence supports your statement. If the good outweighed the bad we would not be looking at the destruction of the environment on a global scale, the fastest rate of species going extinct in history, and the concentration of wealth and resources in the hands of so few. Anyone who cannot see what is going on is living in some sort of bubble that excludes reality.

I haven't lost faith in humanity because I think in grey.

There are bad people but negative actions stand out a lot more than positive actions. People never even think about the neutral actions.

When is the last time you said to yourself, "Hey, that guy is just minding his business going about his day making an honest living?" vs. "Wow, what an asshole!"

Neutral behavior doesn't excite or attract attention.

Therefore I've made it a point not to pay any mind to the assholes when out in public but instead I focus on the people just going about their day, being considerate, rather than focusing on those who are throwing tantrums or making it harder on others.

There are a lot of people who make life harder but if the majority of people were those kinds of people the day-to-day would be chaotic. However, it's mostly peaceful with some chaos sprinkled in vs. mostly chaotic with peace sprinkled in.

It absolutely doesn't, but i suppose maybe that's subjective.

But for me, Just the beauty of the planet itself outweighs all the bad on it. So anything good otherwise is just a bonus 🤷

You really should work on your perception man. Easier said than done; but it'll definitely lead to a happier, more fulfilling life in the long run.

Honestly, hopeful optimism has got me no-where.

But has depressive realism/pessimism gotten you anywhere either?

Where are you trying to "get to"? And why? What do you imagine having or doing that you don't already have? What do you imagine that bringing you? If you can answer these questions in a way that's truthful to yourself, you're already way ahead of most people.

The truth is, the world is both fucked, and everything is special and every moment matters and has ripple effects that last forever. Both are simultaneously true, and it's always been that way. IMO to ignore the good OR ignore the bad, is to only see half the picture.

A true realist wouldn't ignore half of what's happening to suit a particular emotion. They would able to see all emotional angles simultaneously, good and bad, because they're all "true", right?

Sure we're all going to die, but we all have to live in the meantime. Your experience can suck, or you can make it not suck, or whatever you want. You can make it not matter, or matter tremendously. It's literally up to your mind's emotional interpretation of sensory data, which ultimately is something we decide. How do you want to pass the time?

My 2 cents

hopeful optimism may suit you better.

Honestly, hopeful optimism has got me no-where. In fact, I think it's only tricked me into being naive. Being hopeful for a future that doesn't exist, and then being let down by failure. It's a constant thing that's on repeat and it's torture, because I fall into a false sense of security.

Living by your own code brings you peace.

What's not to say that death will also bring you peace? I think if worse comes to worst, and you have a guilty conscious you could just commit suicide. Which will bring you eternal peace. That's what a lot of people resort to after all, when things get tough or you simply can't live with the actions you have made death will always be there. I'm not encouraging it, but to me it's a viable option given the circumstance. (I'm not actively looking by the way, I am suicidal but I won't be dying any time soon).

When you lose basic human characteristics that people are taught from a young age, you don't consider moral principles and you don't use it to ground yourself with which is the case for me. I don't have to be nice, but I choose to be. Does it matter at the end of the day? Not really, because the actions I make are not what keeps me awake at night. What keeps me awake at night is the inability to make change and the hopelessness it brings. Selfish? Yea, but most people are.

It may or may not make you important, but you are part of something.

I am part of something I don't want to be, it's safe to say we didn't have the choice to be here. But because of the selfishness of others we exist, we exist because our parents wanted a child. But to have one whilst acknowledging the problems they will go through is a conflicting thought to me. We exist because they wanted us to, or maybe we were a mistake. At the end of the day we're here, and some of us don't necessarily want to be. We're expected to follow the rules set when regardless of what we choose to do, we're just going to die anyways. Yea, I mean I don't really have any hope for humanity or for myself. So at this point I'm just letting time pass and watching the chaos ensue.

Faith, belief, and truth are tricky things. Add a dose of ego and you get self righteous, narrow minded behavior. I think it's a problem to label people though, a narrow minded person has the capacity to change and grow. I can personally attest to this, the last 18 months has kicked my ass but for the better, I think. Maybe approaching these thoughts from a faith (or lack of faith) perspective is not helpful to you, thinking in terms of hopeful optimism may suit you better.

Such as Moral Principles for example, at the end of the day this is used as a measurement to determine the good nature of somebody. But does any of it really even matter?

Yep it does. But one can only apply these qualities to oneself. You have your own internal code, and while that code may be changeable, when you violate it you will lose sleep. Living by your own code brings you peace.

Regardless of what we choose to do with our lives, how we treat others and what we believe in - sooner or later we will die, and that will be that. All the friends, bad memories, good memories, achievements - gone.

Reasonably true, but.....Think of this existence as a knitted blanket, you are a stitch as are all other living things. If you get pulled, the blanket may unravel, it may have a blemish, it may not be noticeable on one side. But you and others are united in existence to form the blanket. It may or may not make you important, but you are part of something. Does it matter what that something is? In this existence, the truth of our existence may not ever make itself known in a factually proven manner. Going forward with that knowledge in a positive way could be seen as noble.

I don't know, but I don't think anyone has cornered the market on truth. God, atheists, buddha, who knows. Maybe we all are fucked, but you can try to do the best with what you've got. If you fail today, try harder tomorrow. You can grow. I find a lot of peace knowing that I can't change anyone else, that's not my job. But trying to live positively can have a positive effect on others.

Rambling response, I hope it makes sense.

Mouse aiming provides 360° degree movement, in my opinion to a greater extent than controllers. I've spent my whole life with Keyboard and Mouse, so my hands feel really weird when holding a controller. It also just feels like it adds an extra layer between me and the game. But yeah, I definitely do need to get a controller, not just for twin-stick shooters, but also for DmC 3 and Co-Op in Pungeon and Wizard of Legend.

If you get the chance to try with a controller I'd say give it a shot. Games like Gungeon tend to work better that way (called twin-stick shooters).

For instance, I don't have an Xbox One, but I do have a controller for one that I use with my PC on some games. If I was playing Gungeon on PC it's probably what I would be using. I'm sure mouse aiming works, but I wouldn't want to miss out on 360 movement.

That's pretty interesting. But I wasn't referring to CRPGs. I was referring to tabletop. Have you ever played anything like Pathfinder, Fate, Deadlands, Call of Cthulu, GURPS, etc?

As for other genres, I'm a huge fan of micro-strategy like the original two Fallouts, Tom Francis' previous two games, Heat Signature and Gunpoint, and his upcoming game Tactical Breach Wizards, which I'm super excited for. I'm also a huge fan of roguelikes, as I mentioned before, like Dead Cells, Enter the Pungeon, and Wizard of Legend.

In terms of books, I'm a sucker for some hard Sci-fi, Fantasy, or Sci-fantasy, although I have yet to find something which pulls off that last one well, so I decided to just write one for fun. You know that they say, necessity is the mother of invention! I guess I'm also a pretty big fan of soft Fantasy, since I'm currently fighting the Poetic Edda. Classical Urdu literature is also really awesome.

The indie market is definitely where you should look for good games. Lootboxes have led to me losing pretty much all hope in AAA, but indie continues to push out beauties like Hyper Light Drifter and Cuphead.

Thanks for the website! My brother and I always say, "If it ain't free and open-source, it's botnet."

I don't play many RPGs if I'm honest, but my favourite game of all time is Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I play a few other games such as Chivalry Medieval Warfare too. As for my thoughts, I can't say I dislike them but the problem is me not being able or having the energy to learn the mechanics of them. It's why I usually play simple ones haha. I wish I was able to enjoy games as much as I did when I was younger, these days I find it hard to get invested into a video game. I'm usually sceptic when I see a new trailer, as opposed to being excited for it. I guess it's fear from being let down, because I've noticed a lot of games these days are over-hyped and regurgitated. There are indie games better than some triple A titles now, it's weird. I'm either losing interest in the hobby all together, or the industry is changing for the worst. Or a bit of both, I don't really know.

Do you like any other genres? What books do you read? I don't read much, but when I did it was usually dystopian fiction. Also, if you're interested in internet privacy I can refer you to a website that offers free and open source alternatives to things. It's pretty interesting even if you aren't gonna use anything from there!

I grew up with Super Smash TV on SNES and before Enter the Gungeon I was playing The Binding of Issac.

I'd recommend starting with the Soldier though. Starting with armor, a passive item that increases weapon charge speed, reduces spread (making shotguns better at range) and increases reload speed, plus one free ammo refill. Well suited for blasting through and learning the bosses.

Are you playing on a console? I also found the game a lot easier when using the Pro controller for Switch.

Just finished Kingdom Hearts 3 a few days ago so I'm having to think of what I'll play next for wife to watch.

Probably set up a PSP emulator and play the Star Ocean 2 enhanced port.

I've been playing Enter the Gungeon on the Switch after my kids go to sleep. I still have a lot to do and learn in the game.

Killed the past for 3 of the starting characters though. Working on the hunter now.

Well, I like playing games as well! Currently, I'm trying to not be terrible at Wizard of Legend, Enter the Gungeon (read: Pungeon) and Dead Cells. I love seeing random strangers on the internet be happy. I also really enjoy playing RPGs. I'm currently GM'ing Caravan to Ein Arris for my sister. I've started looking into how to protect my privacy online as well. Do you play RPGs? If not, what are your thoughts on them?

Life could be better. As for what I've done recently, absolutely nothing. I think that's the problem, but the cycles we sometimes find ourselves in can be hard to break.

As for what I like doing, not much. I occassionally play games, currently playing Team Fortress 2. I sometimes work on my garden when it's sunny, I'm not particuarly a green thumb but I enjoy working on it whilst it's quiet. I uhh, browse this website in hopes of finding new members and... rant about censorship on Reddit :)) I'm also interested in internet privacy, whilst it's good I am starting to value my privacy more - it's also becoming something I enjoy searching about. Currently been looking into Edward Snowden and the things he leaked from the NSA. I might even start using LineageOS on my smartphone but I'm kind of afraid of fucking it up since I'm still new to all of this.

What about you, Laser_Magnum?

theme-custom.less turns into its own css file which is included after reddit.less. i think they're all supposed to get merged into one big css file, and that would put theme-custom at the end. (subreddit custom css is the very last css though)

i was installing the ssl cert for the chat client... it should be good to go now. when the server restarts like what just happened sometimes you have to send "/connect" once or twice to get back on, and maybe go back to the channel with the left menu.

It seems to be working, but now it wants this:

I also found out that our changes are in a git repo... (you could create a github account and push changes there to have a backup). try: cd ~/src/reddit && git status

Alright the new chat client is live! The subreddit has to have chat enabled, the post has to be announced/stickied, and I changed the required post text to be "chat_post_enable" (instead of "chat_kiwiirc_on").

Chat works when logged out too, but when you login/logout of reddit you are not logged out of chat. I will polish that up somehow. I will also work on getting chat in the sidebar instead.

I'm almost there with Shout IRC. I got it fully working in Shout public mode, but that disconnects users and sends the IRC away message when they reload the page, like Kiwi IRC.

In private mode, Shout keeps you connected and doesn't send the away when the page reloads.. perfect for our use case. I'm just figuring out how to auto create new accounts and skip the Shout login screen. Should have something deliverable by this weekend.

Interesting ideas. I've never used stumbleupon, but that does sound pretty similar. I'll check it out. If it adds a lot of complication, just do it a simpler way. The main thing is that the chat is very obvious and easily accessible.

Perhaps this is more of a long-term idea, but it would be interesting if people could instantiate a chat window in the comments. Like if a hot thread gets a couple responses deep, someone could type the text "$!NEW_CHAT" or something as their comment, and it would replace that comment with an interactive shout/kiwi IRC terminal. Perhaps also even automatically creating a unique IRC room specific to that sub-sub-thread (named with a structure like "#SubredditName_ThreadName_SubTheadNumber"). Then anyone could start a live chat about anything, anywhere.

This ability to summon live chat in comments could be in addition to having the sidebar/stickied subreddit chat. I think that would be extremely cool and powerful. But that's sort of on the wish list, no rush

Chat here! by [deleted] in ChattyKathys

[–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah it would be very narrow. Perhaps we get rid of the listing of users in the channel, on the right side of the chat. Perhaps we could also get rid of "user joined" and "user left" notifications. So it's just like a super streamlined group chat, and people would only show up if they said stuff. That'd be ideal, anyway. Super minimalist, such that you almost can't even tell it's IRC.

Nice job figuring out shout! I look forward to seeing it in action. When you get it working, let me know the process by which you activate a chat window on a subreddit.

It looks like the sidebar is super easy to resize! We can have a chat preference to make the sidebar bigger or 1/2 the screen or whatever. (instead of a 300px width we can use a percentage.)

Then if the irc client can handle a ton of page reloads, I think we're good. I'll also get rid of the pop up warning "Are you sure you want to leave the page?" or whatever that the chat widget does. Yay open source software.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

so the whole chat interface would load in the sidebar? Is it wide enough there to be usable? i will get a test together. I figured out shout irc autologin.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

sounds doable, i think the irc web clients support disconnect / reconnect.

We could have an extreme chat mode too, where 1/3 of the screen is chat that never reloads and the other 2/3 is you browsing reddit and clicking links. Like Stumbleupon. It would break RESAE though to put the reddit site in an iframe I think. If reddit was a single page javascript app then you could have chat that never reloads while browsing different posts. Hmm..

If you feel like it'd be simpler to use shout-irc, then by all means use that. It looks good to me too. It just looks like you've got it so close with the kiwi IRC, you've even got the login name and chat room correctly filled in, it just needs to click the button...

On another note, I had one other idea I wanted to run by you about where to position the chat. Instead of a sticky as the first post of the sub, what if the chat was located at the top of the sidebar on the right? The same position where the "notes" box is located when admin mode is turned on, just immediately below the search bar.

It'd be neat if there was a persistent chat there, but the problem would be to keep it logged in as a person navigates around the sub. It would always be visible in every page which would be awesome! But the downside would be that it would constantly be logging people in and out of IRC as they change from page to page, which would create tons of annoying login/logout notifications.

If there was a way to prevent that through IRC settings (keeping someone's session alive for 5 seconds while they change pages) or alternately by keeping a separate HTML frame that doesn't change when the page changes...then it'd be awesome to put in the top of the sidebar. But if we can't patch that constant log in/out problem easily, then I'd say we just leave it as a sticky at the top of each sub, and people can open it in a separate tab if they want it around as they browse.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. But please use whatever client you like the most, I'm not attached to the kiwi one, other than the fact you seem so close to having it completed! I found this page that says you can create a plugin for the kiwi client to do it, it might be worth looking at: https://kiwiirc.com/docs/scripting/client_plugins

This looks really promising. I think integrating IRC is going to be one if the breakthrough features that makes this website a novel branch-off of the reddit source.

Nice, that looks like it will work but then we have to host KiwiIRC ourselves to make those changes. No big deal, but we have to set it up and update it ourselves.

If we're going to do all that, what about using this IRC client instead? It's more modern and simple looking imo: http://shout-irc.com

(there's one or two other projects who seem to use this same code, like lounge irc).
