Is brave better than custom ff?

Define better. Privacy-wise, custom Firefox is better if you know what you're doing. Mozilla can do some shenanigans regardless, like that extension fiasco.

Brave is better out-of-box, you can install extensions and modify it as much as you can do with Chrome. It's more compatible and convenient than Firefox (customized and uncustomized).

It's good middle-ground for privacy and compatibility/usability.

Ok, I asked because I have cyberfox, palemoon, waterfox etc on some old laptops but those browsers are not supported anymore and I don't want to mess with about:config in a fresh ff

I have always been in ff environment and don't want to move to a chromium based browsers
