The call for a guaranteed basic income is a classic example of Karl Marx and Antonio Gramsci’s understanding that when capitalists have surplus capital and labor they use mass culture and ideology, in this case neoliberalism, to reconfigure the habits of a society to absorb the surpluses.
This was a particularly thought-provoking line from the article.
I don't agree with the title though. I agree with its assessment of neoliberalism, but tying the cart of the unconditional basic income to the ox of neoliberalism seems like a bad idea.
I think unconditional basic income could have a lot of promise. I'm also a strong proponent of using the word "unconditional" to describe it, as other wordings allow for wiggle room that could end up undoing the entire purpose of the idea.
