how do you become less reactionary when interacting with someone who you dont agree with or may be insulting your beliefs?

You gotta stop and think about the source of your anger. Decide if it's rational or not and override your primal instincts. Sometimes it is righteous anger, but stopping to think will remove lots of the emotional charge and help you to respond constructively.
Aka take a time out, then respond.
