That reminds me of an H.G. Wells story called "The time machine" where the main character travels far in to the future and the people living on the surface of the earth are weak and smart, and then below the surface of the earth there are all these other beings that evolved differently, that are all dumb and strong. The weak ones control everything but the strong ones have to do all the work to keep the whole system running for both.

I could imagine a planet separation could cause a divergence, especially if travel is very difficult.

I may have to read that story again. I thought that the Eloi who lived on the surface were dumb and weak, basically cattle. And the Morlocks who lived underground were strong and dumb, but still marginally smarter than the Eloi.

Oh I thought the Eloi were the slightly smarter ones, and had basically tricked/enslaved the Morlocks in to doing their work for them. But you may be right. I haven't read it in a long time
