significant direct democracy like in ancient Athens where something like 500 citizens were randomly selected to serve for a short term (year with 40 meetings a year) to process all decisions for the city state

America is run by businessmen. That's why it sucks. Democracy is just the story they tell you so you feel like all the things they do to you are your fault.
