I'm not sure... Might start discussions about someones vote too much and thereby generating comments that are 99% sure to be useless.

This would also give more power to votes given and less to ignored ones. I mean, did I ignore a posting or was I away for a day a 'missed' it?

Edit: I can see this starting people to use the fun vote to denigrate a posting (So you can show you 'disagree').

[–][deleted] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

i agree, this could be exploited by users to start witchhunts and drive users off the platform and keep potential new users away when they see the shit flyin.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not as long as the witchhunts are publicly held in an open forum. Too many of us are skeptics, including skeptics of the process and skeptics of witchhunts. If it's all transparent then reason should prevail and only fail if ignored.

There are boogie men and witches and G-men and Mossad out there up to no good and we need to be ready.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

For this reason I give little credence to the average votes at all. There are standouts but there are countless that should be but are overlooked.

Let's say you post A+++ quality content at 3am UTC.

A few folks post a bunch of stuff between 3am and 7am and some folks only browse the first page under "new" and vote on things that get re-voted on from 7am to 10am while more content floods in.

Your A+++ post is lost in time like tears in rain.

Comment votes are a whole other ball of wax. I can comment, someone can reply, I can see it, then there can be a whole flurry of activity to their reply - and I won't even be notified about it.

Also, I can comment on a post I'm interested in, and others can comment there too, and I won't be notified about it.

The lack of awareness on SaidIt is problematic.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Well, tbqh JasonCarswell and I don't mean this bad (unless you like it so :p) I (and I'm aware that I might be wrong) see saidit as a news agregator with options to comment. So It wouldn't matter too much if I'm absent for awhile and start commenting/voting again when I have time. It's a better 'view of the day' mostly, unless a submitt truely sticks, I save it and check it whenever I feel like it for updated comments not replying to me... but even those get lost in the rain with the tears of RL, time and sadly 'the baddies win always'. (JK, and no {NOT JfK}) I just check new and if that goes on too long before I see I voted for something I just quit and go over some subs I'm thinking of right then and there.

I'm getting the feelings/vibes you see saidit more as a weirdly ordered wiki-type structure where your problems described above would be more meaningful/biug problems.

TL;DR:

saidit is just MSM only curated by yours trulies {A pun on truly and the multiple)...

Ehm, not facebook comments by your drunk aunt, but self-acquired wisdom from your woke Internet-librarian

It's the same as a news agregaor, facebook 'news sites' only way, way better. But the concept is the same sort off...

[–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

"RL" ?

The baddies don't always win. It seems like it's getting more intense but they haven't won, nor have we. It's an ongoing struggle, though most folks aren't engaged. Maybe they're wu wei.

I suspect SaidIt and wikis have more in common than we know.

As I stated in the opening paragraph of https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt#Criticisms : " SaidIt has inherited many of the systemic flaws that Reddit, Steemit, and countless other forums suffer from in regards to timely voting and exposure. Additional sub, post, and comment threads may certainly benefit from more than default responses-only notifications and/or more than just two emoticon-voting options, but these can't fix all of these issues. "

"meaningful/biug problems" ?

At least getting notification options on posts and comments you want to auto-follow would improve the awareness on this social medium.

*Awareness in this case is about notifications on conversations, not about being "woke".

I'm going to quote you for the article.

FYI "lost in time like tears in rain" is a poetic over dramatic quote from Bladerunner I love.

FYI "lost in time like tears in rain" is a poetic over dramatic quote from Bladerunner I love.

FYI I know, I've met the actor that said those words many times. RL is RealLife.

The baddies don't always win.

When was an instance the baddies didn't win? Or better yet, when did the goodies ever win (so you can't cheap out with a draw).

It seems like it's getting more intense but they haven't won, nor have we. It's an ongoing struggle, though most folks aren't engaged. Maybe they're wu wei.

Wu wei is A Chinese concept and if something they aren't not engaged, I wouldn't take the literal translation too literal, it's more a (as western translations would call it) esoteric expression. [the pun, double negatives and all are with meaning]

It doesn't mean what you wanted it to mean in that phrase and opens fortune cookie '"Many turtles laugh" how many? You ask. "It's turtles all the way" rings the answer.'

I suspect SaidIt and wikis have more in common than we know.

Not in the way I meant.

Awareness in this case is about notifications on conversations, not about being "woke".

But that's not really what this thread is about, it's not about notifications. Also as I sated above in my view those notifications would also get lost in the rain with the tears of Real Life when the days go by and the articles aren't that relevant anymore because this is more a news aggregator than a wiki-system.

I think you misinterpreted my vision of a librarian: someone that orders and provides information but doesn't bother you and doesn't like too much noise.

I'm going to quote you for the article.

Is that a threat? At least do it better than before 'Mneumonic' is not my handle... https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt#cite_note-DebatePyramid5-8

Oh spill! How did you meet Rutger? What was he like? Did he howl for you?

Why can't I call a draw?

What do you mean by goodies and win? What is "is"?

My grandparents died winning. They lived their lives as they saw fit. They built a large log home in Muskoka and retired there. They were bored with that so they opened their home each summer as an art gallery. They went on a cruise each year. They did it their way.

I know what wu wei is. That's why I used it. I figured you'd get a kick out of it.

My fortune cookie reads:

Q: How many surrealists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Fish.

I was referring to the code guts. How did you mean?

No this thread is not about notifications, but if I bitch enough maybe this squeaky wheel will get some grease.

I don't know about the relevance thing. I think a lot stays relevant for a long time. We're programmed to have a disposable new cycle, as if it's important, rather than the big picture. While I like some timely stuff, I'm not here to keep up on the latest. Maybe I'm not like most in this.

My vision of a librarian was hot with glasses, and even hotter when she lets her hair down and...

LOL My bad. Why didn't you point that out before. Ferxed. Spell check no help.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Oh spill! How did you meet Rutger? What was he like? Did he howl for you?

Normal people interactions, The Netherlands is a small country, he's an old dude.

What do you mean by goodies and win? What is "is"?

Exactly my point, they have never.

I know what wu wei is. That's why I used it. I figured you'd get a kick out of it.

Ah the classic 'I merely pretended to not know' troll-scheme, almost a decade old I believe. https://s14-eu5.startpage.com/cgi-bin/serveimage?url=http:%2F%2Fi.4pcdn.org%2Ftg%2F1436408506015.png&sp=38270283560c52785c0e928f65fad709

I was referring to the code guts. How did you mean?

Well that's not the case, you can inspect yourself instead of suspecting.

I meant the whole intention: reddit as saidit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website.

Wikipedia wants to be 'the' encyclopedia.

Why didn't you point that out before.

Because I never read it.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That was the least exciting celeb meet ever documented.

I disagree. The rich have obviously done well for their side and interests. Every time there was a royal beheading it was a win in my book, even if they were replaced by a worse tyrant. It shows they bleed. Sure there have been countless mass uprisings, usually orchestrated to profit the few, but some of them have been good, if only for a while.

You keep saying I know nothing about Eastern Philosophy and claim to be the only one with true deep and profound understanding. I think you should start your own Eastern Troll Philosophy cult. Eat TP for short.

I can't inspect code but I do see a lot of functional similarities.

I said:

Also, I can comment on a post I'm interested in, and others can comment there too, and I won't be notified about it.

And you said:

I'm getting the feelings/vibes you see saidit more as a weirdly ordered wiki-type structure where your problems described above would be more meaningful/biug problems.

Then:

I meant the whole intention: reddit as saidit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website.

Wikipedia wants to be 'the' encyclopedia.

I agree with your assessment of the "totalitarian Wikipedia". But I disagree with that being conflated to my issues mentioned or some notion that I think SaidIt should somehow become dominant or whatever. While I have natural ambitions for SaidIt to be the best it can be, always striving, always improving, I don't need to compare much less dominate.

Why didn't you point that out before.

Because I never read it.

Ah. Telepathy.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yeah, they are just people.

Okay, so we there we disagree. But fair points made.

You keep saying I know nothing about Eastern Philosophy and claim to be the only one with true deep and profound understanding.

I do not, did not and especially not in the reply you're now replying to... If you read carefully what I wrote, I no longer question that you know because you stated You did know but just used it because you figured I'd get a kick out of it.

Also I don't make that claim 'to be the only one with true deep and profound understanding', that is you imagining stuff...

I think you should start your own Eastern Troll Philosophy cult. Eat TP for short.

sigh

I can't inspect code but I do see a lot of functional similarities.

It's both open-source, so it's more of a won't

I agree with your assessment of the "totalitarian Wikipedia". While I have natural ambitions for SaidIt to be the best it can be, always striving, always improving, I don't need to compare much less dominate.

Hmm totally not what I meant. With intention: Saidit is the a newspaper and wikpedia(-like) are encyclopedia like. The discussions in saidit aren't intended to form an article, where the discussions in wikipedia (talk pages) are used to make/improve the article. Ehm putting it easy:

  • Saidit: Critics

  • Wikipedia (and clones): Makers

And no not Telepathy, you asked why I never pointed 'that out before', me saying 'I never read it' {read is past-tense here} is referring to that before... or am I getting English wrong now?

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's called "hyperbolic sarcasm". Maybe I should put quotes around everything I say. We need "emojis"!

"sigh" LOL

I won't cause I can't. I could compare a Hebrew bible and a Greek bible. It's all Greek to me.

Excellent description. When I first came here I was all about article information type comments. I don't know if I've changed much but I think I have maybe. I was never a fan of the rigid talk pages. I think they need a third informal social pages section. It may be a can of worms, but could be worth it.

SaidIt: "Critics"? Maybe vocal spectators or chaotic casual free speakers, as well as aggregators.

Wikipedia: "Makers"? More like (wannabe) anally organized librarian aggregators with agendas.

Not so much making. Some craft words but it's largely about sourcing other MSM makers.

I got your gist. But I tease. :P
