If it doesn't have any actual impact on your life then does it matter? Do you think gut bacteria "know" they are part of a larger organism? Would it matter if they did?

It would matter if the organism was killing the host, and knowing this enabled the organism to prevent this outcome by replicating slower

But that's a concern about habitat sustainability which is orthogonal to the sentience of the habitat itself.
