18 years vs 9 months, why do women get to opt out of such a short period of work, while men cannot opt out of a lifetime of slavery?

I think you misread, or I put it badly. Since OP referred to pregnancy as "work" and compared it to having a job (or at least that's how I read it), I specified that by "work" and "jobs" I meant something that brings in a paycheck.
