Walk across the street and use your mom's phone.

Why not ask my upstairs or next door neighbour who are closer and closer? Up to today the last time I talked to her on the phone was when she called to let me know my Dad died, 2 months and 8 days ago. Last time I saw her was last year.

Well, go see her.

Does she have an internet connection?

Despite being skeptical of 9/11 and Trudeau and power she was paranoid before COVID took my dad and is now twice as paranoid. My dad was a doctor and she was a home economics/science teacher. The scientism is strong in her and she rarely emails, is a Boomer, and relies on the CBC propaganda.

Does she know Covid cured the flu?
Did they get the Jabberwocky?

She'd have to talk with me for me to find out. I've wondered if he or they got the vaccine before most or something. I may never know. I'm fine with that.

Go ring her doorbell, and then run and hide in the bushes.

She lives in an ivory tower with video cameras. Regardless, I'd certainly consider it but it's a tragedy until enough time passes to make it a comedy.

I can recommend voip.ms as they've been very reliable for me.

If your looking for a home phone though, check out the ooma phone. Very cheap and reliable. I think they have service in Canada. You can use your existing home phone handset with it.

I second the voip.ms, I haven't used it yet, but heard it was a good voip to use.

I've been using VoIP.ms for years. Solid service and cheap.

Great recommendations! This helps a lot, thanks.

I always like open source.

I don't like the big price on the handsets.

You'd think they'd have a phone-jack to USB adapter or a cheap PC card adapter.

Thanks for all these links. You think it's worth getting vs a smart phone?

It might be worth checking with your fiber ISP if they can set you up with a VOIP router that you could connect your phone with. I think a VOIP line using a VOIP router and a standard hard-wired telephone might be the cheapest option since you'd be renting the router and using the telephone you already have. Have a look at your ISP's website to see if they have packages with VOIP telephony.

The house fiber is not in my name and I want nothing to do with evil monopoly Bell Canada. Renting is for suckers, though often unavoidable, I try to keep it to a minimum.

My ISP MNSi has mountains of red tape hurdles before they get fiber here too. I don't think either Bell or MNSi provide VoIP.

It's nice to know it still exists, as it was new 20 years ago. It seems like an obvious practical option, but I think the phone company monopolies won't promote it.

The best option then is using an application(avoid Skype) and use a microphone and headset/speakers.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yes! An application is even better - but I'd still need the phone number somehow.

For VOIPs I'd recommend voip.ms or mysudo. I haven't tried them yet but kept seeing good things about them. I actually wanted to transition to VOIP soon due to low cost, privacy, and well...I hardly ever use my phone as a phone really...Going to compare the two later and see which one is better suited for me...

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I'll check them out. Not sure if I need MySudo though.

VOIP seems corporate to me. Don't phone companies have to give you a landline for next to nothing if you have low income?

Cheap mobile sounds good, and you have the advantage of being able to report yourself to the thought police (for that sweet $$$) on the go!

Don't phone companies have to give you a landline for next to nothing if you have low income?

That would be nice.

I don't fear the thought police. I don't have time. I'm trying to save the world! My whole existence is a crime against authority.

I haven't used VoIP in over a decade now. Maybe it's gotten better but it was shitty quality and constantly spammed. Most importantly, we never used it.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

I won't be using it much at all. That's why I may get a smart phone (more uses) with a SIM card for those rare times.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

That's what we do, highly recommend that route.

Does your mom really live across the street and y'all don't talk?

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Literally.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

That's so sad. I'm seeing my parents for dinner tonight. We get along great.

Besides the psychological trauma, at least they didn't abuse me - and they helped me out throughout my life in their own way, which was better than nothing but rarely ever what I needed to succeed. Like government.
