. I think they're in love with me

Still a better love story than Twilight.

. I don't want to dethrone M7 at all

Yeah cause not to be a dick about it, but nobody is jumping up to volunteer $80 a month besides M7.

I don't think that's at all true or I don't know what you mean

We need programmers here.

I also despise bureaucracy, yet I realize it's often necessary to maximize cooperative efficiency

How very Canadian of you. ;)

Yes and no.

People notice when I'm out of commission and I'm just one person.

IIRC, the SaidIt costs have been covered by donations for some time. It's certainly easy enough to put "donate" in the header or sidebox.

Indeed, we need programmers.

And we need public relations, media, and original content. I'm working on these AND the bureaucracy / infrastructure to manage them. /s/GlossedAndProfound and /s/BittersweetSeeds will be dusted off and improved along with the new /s/LeverMind. All will be revealed in time for feedback and improvements. I'm starting these SaidIt-based interactive projects with hopes we may all participate and consider them ours and worth supporting and growing. My focus will narrow on these, away from current event distractions.

I wish more Canadians were more like me, but better lookin.

Yes, people do notice. We are a community, regardless what Chipit thinks.

You're a good looking man, just need to lose like 400lbs. Unless that was a joke when you said it. I can tell you how to lose the weight if you want, it sucks but it's not complicated. I can't however, tell you how to keep it off. I don't know how to do that, I just go on periodic diets as necessary.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (12 children)

Aw shucks. You flirting with me now too? I saw you earlier. I almost commented, "But your wife!!!"

If I lost 400lbs I'd be negative me. It's an adequate photo that instead of flattering makes a husky guy fat somehow with perspective, lines on the shirt, and hair. I don't care. There's no point pretending I've still got a six pack.

I'm open to learning how to loose more though. Though I used to be pretty consistent, I could let my weight can fluctuate along with my bipolar moods.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

I'm open to learning how to loose more thoug

CICO, calories in calories out. If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. If you eat less, you lose weight. Nearly all of a person's daily caloric expenditure comes from their metabolism, which for all practical purposes, can't be changed. So the best way to lose weight is to eat less. And it doesn't matter what you eat, you could live on donuts and lose weight. Don't even need to exercise.

As a caveat though, the 2.5 donuts that would be your total calories would leave you hungry as hell. I always found protein heavy meals to be most filling but some people love a ton a vegetables.

The Chronometer app is the most accurate one I've found for estimating losing weight, all you really got to do is download it and count calories, although that is pretty awful.

[–]Comatoast 5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 3 fun -  (5 children)

If you account for certain medications, CICO might be nearly impossible to keep up with. If you take a medication that lowers your body's requirements for energy by decreasing the metabolic rate, your body won't need as many calories and you end up screwed. Plus there's water retention. Personally, my body doesn't give a shit if I even went 100 calories below my intake (and I take Adderall XR to boot), if I eat bread I'm going to have an immediate 3-5 lbs water retention gain over the next few days.

I had pretty great luck with low carb, losing all pregnancy weight and more--leaving me more than ten pounds less than I was after high school graduation (that was before I went back on my meds, so Adderall can't take the credit). Different things work for different people though, and it really just seems like a toss up. Low fat diets and low protein diets are truly awful though, like abysmally so. Cholesterol is the parent of a shit ton of hormones, and when you're not getting enough it's going to start screwing around with other body processes.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Water weight is depressing when you're dieting but I just ignored it since it wasn't fat. I take creatine sometimes and I can retain as 8lbs of water then, although ofc being a guy that's not as noticeable.

I had pretty great luck with low carb

I prefer low carb, high protein, but only because it's filling. I weighed and logged everything I ate for a year, and my weight changed predictably over the long term based on the calories, once I ignored fluctuations, no matter what is was that I ate.

If thyroid meds or something reduce your BMR, that's going to affect every diet.

I was taking ephedrine too (almost chemically identical to amphetamines) and although it's handy as an appetite suppressant until you get used to it, it didn't boost my metabolism.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

This jives more with what I know, limited as it is. Low carb is key, but difficult on a tight budget. Wonder about the obesity crisis? Look at the food pyramids we grew up with and processed white Wonderbread.

[–]Comatoast 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

It's completely possible on a tight budget. Fresh vegetables on sale/frozen, frozen berries or fresh, cantaloupe or honeydew, meats, cheeses, eggs and fats. You can get really creative with it, or just order bunless burgers at fastfood places with side salads. It's cheaper to end up just making your own salad dressings, tastier too.

American food pyramids relied heavily on higher carbohydrate intake, and when our wheat-based products are made with shit-tier flours from wheat that is effectively just filler material, I could see it causing problems.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Agreed.

It's also a matter of not being lazy to the max and depending how picky you are.

I throw tinfoil down in a casserole dish to avoid doing dishes, throw on a bunch of veggies in, frozen or not, with butter/margerine, spices, cheeses, and/or some kinda sauce from a jar.

I'll also slow cook a bunch of stuff and keep adding to it for a couple days.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

CICO works because of thermodynamics. You can't pull energy (calories) from the void, a donut won't make you extra fat, nor can you send them there, so conversely no food will make you lean. Every diet that works, works on an underlying CICO principal. Atkins works, but not if you eat a caloric surplus. I mean, nothing could.

Low carb helps cause protein is more filling. I think it's the most filling macro. Cheapest protein source I've found is supplements btw, since it does get expensive.

There's a lot of misinformation out there on dieting. Because everyone wants a magic bullet. Eat these superfoods and lose 15lbs! But a lb of fat is roughly 3500 calories so every 3500 deficit you get you drop a lb. Max safe weight loss is generally 2lbs a week at 1200 calories minimum (I won't go below 1500). You need something like 10% of those calories to be from fat for your hormones to work right.

Thank you for the heads up!!!

Clever. This happened in chat a year or two ago. They changed an "L" in Carswell to a #1 or "I".

I can appreciate their creativity and acknowledge their tenacity even if I despise what they're doing.

What I'd do with the saidit code is start trimming it down and I've mentioned it before, removing subs. Makes more sense to spawn individual Saidit instances instead as needed, which would require more growth to require.

Some sort of rss vis text mail and confirmed by trusted nodes or something could propagate updates to the instances in a decentralized fashion. Just spit balling here, but why bother with a reddit clone when we can move towards a reddit improvement.

I like Power Board forum features too, nicer profiles, better mentions and built in thread tracking, better mod tools, built in web kb.... But also at the same time a reddit stripped down to bare function. Lots of functionality, as little overhead as possible.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

The code is not this problem, but is limited in other ways. The database is another thing. M7D3 years ago said they didn't want to mess with the subs for "open transparency" reasons, because if they started fucking with them people might accusing them of deception and such. Admin this but not that? That never made sense to me.

As I've stated before, I'm all in favour of a new rule that all empty subs older than a set period (ie. 2 months seem more than enough time) will be auto-deleted. Hopefully they could be recreated or unhidden if necessary. That should cut down a huge amount.

If we want to cut down even more detritus we could have a sub dedicated to reporting sub nominations for deletion because they have so few and/or old and/or nonsense and/or troll stuff. I don't think it's possible under our limited resources but I'd love to see some subs merged. ie. /s/CorruptScience is a better name than my /s/OpenScience_Scientism or that there are /s/PS1 /s/PS2 /s/PS3 /s/PS4 /s/PS5 /s/PSX (I haven't looked to see if these are active or not, I don't do games).

I don't understand any of this but it seems very interesting. Could you please restate it differently? Maybe like I'm five?

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

I was just thinking a new forum codebase would be nice, stealing all the nice features I like from various other places.

Although I mentioned ProBoard, which the site I was thinking of moved to Ip.Board by Invision. I know you're not a gamer, but check out gtaforums.com.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I've mentioned this to d3rr many times. If we could find a more modern FLOSS and ideally decentralize forum software with an active global coder support base, then all we'd have to do is export the database (obviously easier said than done). Preferably in preferences we could choose our forum GUI - such as appearing like Reddit/SaidIt, Facebook, or in some other format.

Hmm, could use a blockchain to verify identity too. People love when you shoehorn crypto technology into apps.
