Why the secrecy of space aliens? What are governments of the earth so scared of?

The reason I ask is one of science. And facts. While both can be influenced by politics and religion neither science nor facts on determined by politics and religion. At 60 yo I have had the entirety of my life awash with movies and TV of space aliens, exploring space and what exactly is "the prime directive". Why such secrecy? Has government been informed of something so drastic as to change the course of our world if aliens were interviewed on live tv? What is that? I have no fear of any "space aliens". Either they are or they are not.
